Throughout the year, Buyouts gathers intel about the most talked about emerging funds in the market from our networks of LPs and fundraisers. Emerging managers, including first-timers, remain of interest even in the tough fundraising markets. In a Probitas Partners survey last year, 75% of 69 institutional investor respondents said they were interested in exploring new firm spin-outs. Only 2% of respondents had no interest in first-time funds. Earlier this year, we surveyed our fellow Los Angeles-based GPs to get a pulse check on the LA venture ecosystem. Here’s what we found: 💗 Deal flow is healthy, and most LA venture investors (68%) are seeing the same or more deal flow YoY. ✈ LA investors are spending time in a variety of markets, with NYC, Austin, and SF following closely on LA’s heels. 🔍 Innovation is concentrated in AI and machine learning, space, and commerce. 💸 Funding is happening, but it’s barbell-shaped, with deals concentrated at the early and late stages. Funding post-Series A has been challenging. 🚩 LA is differentiated, but not without its challenges. Key difficulties include not attracting enough AI talent (despite having the largest number of engineers graduating from our region over any other in the United States); talent relocated to more tax-friendly or less expensive locations; and the great SoCal / NoCal divide 🙏 Thank you to all our many respondents! Should private markets look more like public markets? In this Citywire interview with the supremely knowledgeable Selin Bucak, we discuss the different angles of the private markets wealth push. Where should private markets and public markets intersect? I think it should intersect more in the execution and infrastructure than it should in trying to fit a "square peg in a round hole." "I'd almost want this space to think about looking more like public markets in the execution, where there's the ability to press a 'buy button' and then alternatives are a piece of a portfolio than have it look more like public markets from a product perspective where you're trying to combine private-public products, which I also think will happen." I always like to share positive news in the capital markets. Per PitchBook, "the value of US PE exits climbed in Q3 to reach an impressive $107.1 billion—the highest quarterly reading since Q1 2022, according to PitchBook’s latest US PE Breakdown. The exit count in Q3 rose 29% from the previous quarter to 394, exceeding pre-pandemic volumes for the first time in two years." This is an important, if still small, step in the right direction. The capital markets can be likened to an assembly line. The inputs on the front end are early-stage companies and startups. The middle of the assembly line consists of venture capital and private equity funds of all shapes and sizes. The 'finished product' on the back end is exits in the form of sales, mergers, or IPOs. If the exit mechanism on the assembly line is broken - which it has been for a few years now - it screws up the entire system all the way back down the line to startups. Any step in the right direction is good news. It would appear if the assembly line is beginning to restart. It will take some time and patience to clear the line, but hopefully this most recent market correction is in the rear view mirror. 🧬 This week's Austin Bio + Health Roundup highlights significant data trends, my stance on covering funding announcements, new partnerships, and action across the Texas Bio Triangle. 🧬 💰 Funding: The Way I Plan to Cover Funding Announcements You may have seen reports of a local Bio & Health startup’s funding round through an SEC report filing. While some outlets have covered this, my position is not to. I prefer to support our builders directly rather than trolling the filings for scoops. There is plenty of real investigative journalism that our city would be well served by if that is where they focused. Remember I am not a journalist and I am not the media. When the company is ready to announce their round officially, I’ll gladly shout it to the rooftops. 📊 Data Peter Walker at Carta reports that in 2017, Biopharma and Medical Devices captured just under 10% of all VC dollars. By 2023, this figure rose to 17.7%, and in Q1 2024, it reached 24%. The overarching tailwinds favor our sector and region with trends towards Bio & Health and the physical & digital intersection. Energy and hardware, two other sector blossoming in Central Texas, also saw similar share gains. 🤝 M&A and Partnerships Sensi.AI, a 24/7 senior care intelligence agent, is partnering with Caring Senior Service to deploy SensiAI’s platform in Caring’s 50 locations across the US. Thoughtful commentary from Sandhya Nakhasi in ImpactAlpha asserting that now is the time for impact investors to seize the moment and lead, particularly during this election cycle. Their contention is that our markets have become increasingly financialized and disconnected from people and their needs, and that impact investors have the tools and means to address these issues. I'm struck by the note that it’s incumbent upon impact investors to align with those advocates pushing for government regulations, oversight and community-informed incentives that will help bring about a more equitable economy. When the big deals dry up, Wall Street adjusts and digs deeper into the middle market. The headline story over the last few years is the significant decrease in funding and deal activity - particularly in the earlier stage VC and the later stage PE mega-deals. However, deals in the middle-market space have remained surprisingly robust, as detailed in this The Wall Street Journal article. From the story: "Middle-market deals made up a record 74% of private-equity buyouts by count in 2023, outpacing the previous high of nearly 72% set in 2019, according to PitchBook." It's important to remember that success in every industry comes down to the strength of relationships. Finance is no different. The upside to the big banks of getting involved with smaller companies is the opportunity to build those banking relationships earlier in the business maturation process. Without question those relationships will bear fruit down the road for the banks as those companies grow.
