Excited to hear that Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco is listening to its CDFI members and seriously discussing creating a Community First Fund-like program similar to those at Chicago and Dallas FHLBanks! The CDFI-FHLB Working Group, a coalition of 40 CDFI members of the FHLBank System asked ALL FHLBanks to create similar funds in each Bank. We are making some progress with Federal Home Loan Bank of New York, Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta discussing joining Chicago and Dallas in answering CDFIs' call to get capital to disadvantaged communities in ways that don’t always directly produce collateral eligible for pledging. Question is where's the leadership from the other 6 FHLBanks? Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston; Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh; Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis (FHLBI); Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines; Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka and Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati what are you all doing to meet the needs for Predevelopment or Construction Loans on LIHTC Projects? Or purchase-rehab loans in under-resourced communities? Or economic development micro-loans? Or housing development loans on Tribal lands? THE VITAL ROLE OF COMMUNITY BANKS AS ANCHORS OF LOCAL PROSPERITY From supporting local organizations to providing critical PPP loans during COVID, community banks like Haven Savings Bank are integral to the fabric of American life. Community banks stand as pillars of local economies, embodying a spirit of closeness and trust that larger institutions often struggle to replicate. These banks play a crucial role in fostering economic growth, supporting small businesses, and nurturing personal connections within communities. In times of crisis, such as natural disasters or economic downturns, community banks often serve as lifelines for affected communities. During the COVID Crisis, according to Small Business Administration data, community banks made more than 65 percent of PPP loans and served nearly 60 percent of PPP recipients, which saved an estimated 33.7 million jobs. Haven Savings Bank was proud to do their part as well, providing 600 PPP Loans totaling $33 million over two years.

We know that community development financial institutions (CDFIs)—which provide financing for communities with low incomes to pursue community development efforts, increase access to homeownership, and support small businesses—are the backbone of healthy communities. Their prevalence and activity have greatly increased over the past few years, making all the difference for communities across the country. An informative new analysis from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York highlights how despite the vast growth of CDFI efforts, CDFIs need more sources of capital to meet the high demand for their products and services. Some interesting stats from their report include: - The number of loans made by CDFIs more than doubled between 2018 and 2022. - Residential loans made up about half of all loans made by CDFIs - The 10 most active CDFIs contributed more than 25% of the total dollar volume of all CDFI loans RWJF is proud to invest in CDFIs doing important work across the nation and provide them with the flexible capital they need to increase their impact. NEW: HUD and the Biden-Harris Administration just announced major new actions to boost housing supply and lower costs for Americans across the country. 🏠🛠️ 1️⃣ HUD made available $100 million in grant funding to eliminate barriers to affordable housing production and preservation. Additionally, HUD launched a $250 million challenge for communities that receive direct annual awards through the Community Development Block Grant program.
