CLIENT ALERT: On July 3, 2024, the California State Water Resources Control Board adopted permanent water conservation regulations intended to help preserve water supplies. The regulations do not directly restrict water use by individuals, businesses or suppliers of irrigation water but will apply to approximately 405 urban water suppliers, including cities, water districts and private water companies, that supply approximately 95% of California’s population with potable water. Heather Cooley, Pacific Institute Director of Research, was recently featured in a public service announcement for Rain Ready California, hosted by the Sacramento County Department of Water Resources, the California Stormwater Quality Association, and the Sacramento Stormwater Quality Partnership.    Rain Ready California highlights local examples of stormwater capture projects and inspires residents to get involved.   As found in a recent Pacific Institute report, California – with large expanses of urbanized areas with rooftops, roads, and other hard surfaces - is the ninth-largest producer of urban stormwater runoff in the United States. The #Sacramento region alone generates an average of 65 million gallons of stormwater runoff each year. In Pierce County, Anchor QEA developed and led a field survey program to conduct stream mapping, assess culvert barriers to fish passageways, and update the existing water typing determinations. These data will be used to identify where fish habitats extend upstream, support reviews of land use and future restoration projects, and prioritize fixing fish passage structures to improve access to these habitats. One technique used for this data collection was environmental DNA (eDNA). What is eDNA? eDNA is a non-invasive tool that helps us understand and monitor biodiversity with remarkable accuracy. By analyzing small traces of DNA left behind by organisms in soil, water, or air, eDNA provides valuable insights into the presence and distribution of species. We can identify species that are hard to detect through other methods, track changes in biodiversity over time, and target restoration efforts more effectively based on accurate data. eDNA enhances our ability to restore ecosystems, ensuring our actions are informed and impactful. #eDNA #AnchorQEA #PierceCounty #Restoration

Caltrans District 11 has awarded the Coronado Bay Bridge Suicide Deterrent Project to the Myers-Traylor Joint Venture in partnership with COWI+TYLin. GPA Consulting is pleased to join this team, assisting with biological resources and historic preservation planning services. This $127.8 million project—the first Progressive Design-Build procured and awarded in California—addresses a pressing public health crisis, as the Coronado Bay Bridge has the second-highest number of suicides among bridges in the United States. Approximately 400 lives have been lost since its opening in 1969. The project will involve constructing a vertical 8- to 10-foot-tall stainless-steel deterrent fence on both sides of the 2.18-mile-long structure. Additionally, superstructure bays beneath the bridge deck will be enclosed to facilitate future maintenance and inspections. VA Boise Seeks Contractor for Mechanical Space Asbestos Removal U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is conducting market research to find qualified contractors to remove asbestos-containing dust from a mechanical space at the Boise VA Medical Center. Project Details: Remove asbestos-containing dust from a 960 square foot mechanical space attached to an unoccupied basement corridor. The County of Hawai‘i is taking significant steps to rehabilitate its aging wastewater infrastructure. Thanks to a collaborative effort with the U.S. EPA and the Hawai‘i Department of Health, plans are underway to address critical maintenance and ensure compliance with the Clean Water Act. Following California's model, other western utilities are now implementing safety controls and land management practices for ignition source risk management against catastrophic wildfires. Case in point on a cascading impact, the recent Texas panhandle wildfires will result in higher electricity bills for Xcel customers. ⛰️ The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public feedback on its draft plan for managing the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument in Oregon. Currently managed under three separate management plans, this new proposal aims to consolidate the efforts to protect the National Monument’s one-of-a-kind biodiversity. The draft management plan addresses key issues such as wildfires and environmental protection. Our Friends Grassroots Network member Friends of Cascade-Siskiyou has provided some great information on how to comment and some key concerns to consider addressing in your feedback to the BLM.
