Scaling up community college baccalaureates is about meeting community needs by educating local residents where they live, work, and raise their children. This isn’t a new idea. It shouldn’t be controversial. To put a finer point on it, this is about our nation’s future. Access to bachelor’s degrees matter to all of us. It’s not just for those who know how to go to college already. It’s for those whose potential we have yet to realize — and more critical than ever that we do. Come on America, let’s stop thinking #highered is for some of us but not all of us. Let’s stop fighting among ourselves and scale up CCB degrees. Let’s get this done!

I've been thinking about...Collective Genius. I am fresh off of our annual National Center on Education and the Economy Leaders Retreat - superintendents and their teams from across the nation joined together in #seattle last week to dig deeply and consider the research and all that it takes to reimagine systems to be #learnercentered and #futureready. Being in that space, with #leaders of all levels, hit home for me the power of SHARING our thinking and learning, rather than operating in our silos. As educators and leaders, we often find ourselves juggling a multitude of responsibilities, striving to provide the best learning environments for our students. Yet, amidst the chaos, we often overlook a crucial component of success: the power of collective reflection, planning, and strategizing. 🔍 **Why Collective Genius Matters:** 1. **Shared Wisdom:** When we come together, we pool our diverse experiences, perspectives, and ideas, creating a rich tapestry of knowledge that surpasses what any one of us could achieve alone. 2. **Innovative Solutions:** Collaboration sparks creativity. By engaging in meaningful discussions, we can uncover innovative solutions to the challenges we face in our schools and districts. 3. **Mutual Support:** Building a supportive community allows us to lean on each other, fostering resilience and preventing burnout. Our leaders filled each other's buckets last week just by being on hand to share stories, to celebrate wins, and to support losses. 📚 Every person with us in Seattle could have opted out. They have a myriad of pressures that could have overwhelmed them...kept them back in their districts, in their bubbles. They could have chalked it up to "I don't have time." ⏳ **Making Time for What Matters:** We often think, "I don't have enough time." The reality is that it's in our power to MAKE time for what truly matters. Prioritizing collective reflection and planning isn't an optional extra; it's a necessity. It’s about shifting our mindset from immediate tasks to long-term impact. 💡 **How to Start from Where You're At:** - Schedule regular team meetings dedicated to reflection and strategic planning. - Foster a culture of open communication and trust, where every voice is heard. - Celebrate successes and learn from setbacks together. - Initiate cross-district conversations to expand your team's thinking. - Explore our #NCEELeadersCollaborative and all that it has to offer. Districts in California are a little different…but this applies accords the board. I’d add that during COVID, LEAs added new programs and roles thanks to ESSER funding—but now that funding is drying up, we need to think smarter about staffing. By partnering with local agencies and businesses for some fractional support districts can keep costs low while ensuring that students don’t suffer and staff burnout is minimized. Focusing on partners who lighten the load so schools can focus on what they do best—educating students.

In an effort to address workplace violence, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 553 on September 30, 2023. The deadline for implementation is July 1, 2024, leaving employers with limited time to prepare. This first-of-its-kind legislation requires employers to establish basic safeguards to ensure the safety of their employees while on the job. CLG Coaching partnered with the UC San Diego Health - Moores Cancer Center this Spring to create a survey for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) that served as both an art and a science. To get this right, we started by asking ourselves: what makes a great organizational EDI survey experience ❓ 💡 This is what we came up with... 📕 Trust. In the organization, in the leaders, in confidentiality, and in the ease of the process. That means there has to be clear and precise... 📙 Communication & Encouragement. Messaging needs to be both detailed on HOW it will happen and WHAT WILL COME from the data to create engagement by the participants. The need to see the dream outcome and believe it. 📒 Leadership Support (!!). Leadership involvement will significantly boost participation rates​ and connect goals with intent. If your leaders aren't talking about it, posting about it, taking time in team meetings to complete it - that says everything. 📗 Ease of Participation. KISS - it works every time. The survey should be easy to access and complete. Complicating it to make it feel more mighty will deter folks from engaging with it. 📘 Incentives. I'll take a gift card any day of the week to complete something. ESPECIALLY when I know what good things can come from my participation. (But free coffee never hurts.) 📚 Feedback Loop. THE GOLDEN TICKET! Sharing the results with the participants and outlining clear and actionable steps the organization will take based on their feedback can build trust and encourage future participation​. Partnering with MCC was an exemplary experience, and I am thrilled at the work completed and the collaborative excellence demonstrated.
