So Delaware wants to be a “tech hub” 🏙️, but here’s the reality check: according to Code.org's 2024 State of Computer Science Education Report, only 61% of high schools here offer computer science 🖥️, and less than 6% of students are actually signing up. Meanwhile, neighboring states like Maryland and New Jersey are way ahead—fully funded 💸, with state plans 📜, and higher enrollment numbers. And what about the younger kids? We’re handing out Chromebooks in elementary school 📲, but where’s the computer science education to go with them? Kids are using tech every day but aren’t getting the skills they need to understand it, build with it, or innovate for the future. 🌐 If we’re serious about preparing our kids—and Delaware—for a tech-driven future 🚀, it’s time to go beyond talk and invest in computer science at every grade level. While not called out specifically in this HBR article, there is an Open-Closed ecosystem spectrum that exists in healthcare as well. Open ecosystems in healthcare, exemplified by FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) and Health Information Exchanges (HIEs), provide significant advantages by promoting interoperability and data sharing across various platforms and organizations. In contrast, closed ecosystems and closed-loop systems also exist across different clinical care products and integrated healthcare delivery systems that offer more control and security, but can limit integration with external systems and limit comprehensive data sharing. Finding that right balance across the spectrum by establishing a standardized framework for exchanging healthcare information electronically via FHIR and HIEs to facilitate secure and seamless data sharing between different healthcare systems is key. This interoperability enhances the coordination of care, reduces redundancy, and improves patient outcomes by ensuring that healthcare providers have access to comprehensive and up-to-date patient information. By making patient data readily accessible to authorized users, critical health information is made available when and where it is needed, facilitating better decision-making and continuity of care. Open ecosystems like FHIR and HIEs drive innovation, enhance collaboration, and improve healthcare outcomes by breaking down data silos and fostering a more integrated and efficient healthcare system.
