  • How Should Leaders Behave?

    CLO Magazine

According to “The Global Report: Leadership Traits, Insights for Today, Pathway to the Future,” published in May, there are several behaviors professionals want their leaders to demonstrate today and in the next 10 years (Editor’s note: The authors wrote this report). However, these vary based on age and location. That shift makes sense as learning leaders should make it a best practice to customize leadership development programs and other talent management processes in an organization.

Having spent more than 20 years in global leadership roles for companies like Booz Allen Hamilton, the erstwhile Satyam Computer Services (now Tech Mahindra), and HCL Technologies, I have witnessed the full spectrum of leaders from best to worst. My career involved conducting business in more than 60 countries, including spending seven years working full time in India with the remainder in the U.S. When posed with the question why and how leaders derail, I was asked to comment on Ramalinga Raju, founder of Satyam Computer Services whom I worked with while Chief Learning Officer from 2005 to 2009. My immediate reaction was not to want to revisit something that was such a painful experience in my life and the lives of thousands of others. My next thought was it wasn’t appropriate to single out one person because there are as many ways to derail and focusing on just one would be a disservice.

He consulted for top companies such as Deloitte, Yahoo, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Western Union, AT&T, Barclays, and Xerox, shaping the futures of global organizations. On the outside, Ed had it all: a global career as a corporate executive, author, and consultant with worldwide recognition.

But behind that mask of success was a terrified child, haunted by his father’s relentless, life-threatening abuse. His father’s cruelty wasn’t just physical—it was verbal and sexual, shattering Ed emotionally and spiritually. Every day, he fought to survive his father’s violent rage while the world saw a man in control.

Less than 16% of men ever share their stories of abuse.

Now, for the first time, Ed shares his traumatic journey of pain and abuse at the hands of his father. His courage in telling this gut-wrenching story will inspire others to break their silence, discover the power of resilience, and begin to heal.

VULNERABLE: One Man’s Journey from Abuse to Abundance weaves together several powerful themes that resonate with a broad audience:

Breaking the silence: The importance of speaking out against abuse and ending the stigma that surrounds it.

Healing through vulnerability: How embracing vulnerability can lead to strength, resilience, and empowerment.

Resilience and growth: How trauma can be transformed into a source of strength, with practical advice on achieving personal growth.

Community and support: The critical role of loved ones, friends, and community in supporting survivors and helping them navigate their healing journey.

VULNERABLE is more than a memoir; it’s an urgent call to action and the start of a movement to break the crushing silence of abuse and help people reclaim their lives.
