As the war on DEI continues, companies are dropping the “E” from their DEI focus — meaning that equity will no longer be an explicit focus. This trend reflects broader pushback against DEI efforts, with some firms responding to legal threats and societal backlash by either dropping or downplaying the "equity" component in their diversity strategies. Besides the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) mentioned in the repost from Inclusion Allies Coalition below, other companies that have scaled back or modified their DEI initiatives include major tech firms such as Microsoft, Zoom, and Google. These companies have reduced their DEI teams amid tech industry layoffs and legal challenges to DEI programs.

An attempt to upgrade DEI backfired Why it matters: DEI, the acronym for diversity, equity and inclusion, has become a lightning rod for controversy. Claims of disingenuousness, tokenism, reverse discrimination and overall ineffectiveness have had DEI proponents playing nonstop defense in recent years. SHRM, a leading organization for HR professionals, has attempted to improve upon DEI by de-emphasizing the equity piece, instead opting for "I&D" as a way to put inclusion "front and center." You see where this is going, right? Well, while SHRM's attempt to make DEI better may have had the best of intentions, outspoken critics say it ended up accomplishing the exact opposite of what it set out to do. It begs the question: How did no one at the organization think to say "hey, if we exclude equity so we can lead with inclusion, that isn't exactly inclusive, right?"

Not sure how I missed this earlier this year, but this article provides good reporting on why SHRM removed E and some of the backlash that occurred. Have you ever had a conversation with someone, and they say something that truly blows your mind?  Well, I had one of those moments during my fireside chat with Rachel Botsman, a world-renowned expert in creating trust. Last week, we had Rachel close out our Leadership Connect, a two-day event that brings together senior leaders across Verizon to discuss how we can live into our purpose and live up to our values. Rachel and I chatted about the importance of building trust in the workplace – a critical component of Culture OS – and what we can do as leaders to create the right space and support for our employees to believe that we will do right by them and for them. While the conversation was overflowing with rich insights, there was one point Rachel raised that resonated deeply. I asked her, “What’s one thing you wish leaders would stop doing?” Rachel responded, “I wish leaders would stop playing Tetris in a Minecraft world.” Now, let me break that down a bit more. Rachel discussed how leaders need to stop harping on generational differences and getting caught up in how hard it is to work with younger people. She likened it to the fact that many executives grew up playing Tetris, a very linear and structured game, which reflects their style of leadership. However, younger generations have games like Minecraft and Roblox, where it’s their world and their rules. It defines who they are and what they expect from those around them. Some misinterpret that as entitlement or a lack of respect for authority. However, Rachel’s point was much deeper. We challenge our workforce every day to come up with new ideas. If we ask our employees to think outside the box, why are our systems, processes, and expectations so incredibly linear? We want them to be bold thinkers, but we are stifling them in our Tetris world, where we expect everything to line up and fit accordingly. Of course, this transcends generations and age groups—not every leader stacks shapes for the sake of order, and not every young person is averse to a linear way of life. But it’s an exceptionally poignant perspective when we talk about meeting our employees where they are and with the support they need. If we want to unleash the creativity of the up-and-coming workforce, we must embrace a Minecraft mindset and let them build the world they need to do their best work. After all, isn’t that what we want for all employees? Trust is not asking every employee to do something one way. It’s the opposite. It’s allowing people to be who they are, show up as they need, and make space for them to unlock their potential. Thank you, Rachel, for inspiring me so much that I raced back to my desk to capture this post-it.  I can’t wait to take the insights you shared and put them into practice.
