My agency generates $75K / month in revenue. If I had to start again... Here’s how I'd close $10K / month in 90 days (or less): 1. Create a plan Most people get stuck in planning. But as a planner, I'd feel lost without one. So I would spend 48 hours to: A) Think long-term Here I'd use Debbie Millman's Remarkable Life. 1. Close my eyes and imagine a day in 10 years 2. Let go of any fears and doubts 3. Write about the day in detail 4. Write until I can't possibly write any more B) Think short-term Here, I'd get more tactical. 1. Imagine the next 3 months 2. Map out major goals 3. Map out my daily routine Great, now I have a destination. And a direction - time to pick a skill. 2. Pick a skill I'd assess my skillset for value: - Ask my friends what I'm good at - Think about what businesses need - Think about type of work I love It could be: - Coding - Writing - Designing - Advertising - Automation - Lead generation For me, it's design. And every biz needs design. 3. Create a biz Most people overcomplicate this. I'd timebox launch to 2 days. In the next 48 hours I would: 1) Pick a name (not than my personal name) 2) Make a site (keep it simple, one-pager for now) 3) Get generic emails (hello@ / support@) These are low ROI at the start - so I'd move fast here. Getting started is what matters. 4. Start telling people Most people crumble under peer pressure. I'd use it to my advantage. I'd tell everyone I'm starting an agency: - My friends and family - My old coworkers - My local grocer Now I have people asking about my agency. I better do something about it. 5. Find my first 5 clients Here's where it gets real. Volume and persistence matter. I would: - Message my friends and family for referrals - Offer a reduced risk trial with a 'discounted' fee - Cold DM 30 people on LinkedIn with a free audit - Attend networking events with my target audience If I put myself out there everyday - I can't lose. 6. Nail the first call Now I'm not a salesperson. But what do I know? I know my craft. In the call, I would: - Be personable - Speak confidently - Show them my expertise - Ask questions (very important!) Also, I'd be prepared for 85% of calls to not be a good fit. It’s all part of the game. 7. Leverage results Now I have my first client. Time to overdeliver. I would: - Be easy to work with - Respond in under a day - Execute to a high standard Then ask for a testimonial and: - Add testimonials to my website - Add the work to portfolio link - Add the case study And then? 8. You can double your newsletter’s revenue with this 1 simplified strategy: Connect directly with sponsors who value your niche audience. And focus on direct sales. Here’s a step-by-step process for you: 1 – Create a segmented audience profile and prospect categories. e.g. Your 2 audience segments could be: (a) B2B professionals interested in AI (b) individual investors. A year ago, I thought LTV was a B.S. metric Working with $10M+ brands, taught me it's a powerful lever to pull. LTV is the #1 growth "hack" to long-term success in DTC. What pains me is agencies using it to justify poor ad performance, while brands are in the red paying for their fees. - "CPMs are rising, we just need to keep spending more." - "Customers go through 36 steps before buying from you." - "Just focus on your LTV, and everything else will fall into place." Sounds familiar? These often mask 1 underlying issue. Poor performance in ad accounts. The real question should be: How can we profitably scale ads in 2024 while using LTV to thrive rather than survive? Now, this is where it gets interesting. We drove 7-figs+ in profit for clients using creatives on FB & TikTok Ads, thanks to this 57-year scheme: Sophistication Stages. WTF are Sophistication Stages? You may ask. Here’s a reality check from the trenches of campaign management: data isn’t optional; it’s the engine behind an effective strategy. Every quarter, I oversee multiple campaigns, and it’s surprising how many campaigns are launched based on broad assumptions or vague goals like “increase engagement.” Sure, engagement sounds nice, but what’s actually driving it? Are we really reaching the right people? EOY is crucial for identifying key insights to shape a stronger year ahead. Reports can often feel like surface-level recaps rather than valuable insights and metrics like audience retention, top-performing content types, and ROI are often left unexplored. So, I got to the drawing board and committed to a blend of quantitative and qualitative data analysis, where we identified major gaps in targeting and content. The impact was immediate and we suddenly had a precise strategy to enhance each campaign’s performance. With our first run of this approach, our strategy overhaul raised a client's campaign engagement rate from 2% to 8% and in some cases, we even hit 11%. The takeaway? Brands have different needs, and as agencies, it’s our responsibility to provide customized, data-backed insights that fuel optimization. Brands depend on us not just to run campaigns but to consistently refine them with real, actionable insights, not gut feelings or generic performance metrics.

The best CEOs understand their next customer is in control of the buying process. The best CEOs understand the role that change management, excellent communication, and marketing can have on growth. If you want to bring more ‘local’ in your ‘global-to-local’ marketing, start by rethinking your briefing process. Briefs should be the single source of truth for every campaign. This is where you lock in your audience insights, plan your timing, and set the tone for how your brand shows up internationally. The briefing process is also the perfect opportunity to get all the key stakeholders together (including the agency/ team responsible for your localisation strategy), look them in the whites of their eyes and share the knowledge from which this campaign will grow. In our experience the teams who take the time to bake this into the process save hours of pain later down the line, have a more coordinated team and experience lower stress levels as a result. Sounds simple, but you will be surprised how often this gets missed!

After spending 6+ years at Meta helping brands, I’ve learned to never try and ‘outsmart’ their system. That’s the easiest way for any advertiser on Meta to destroy their performance. And it’s because their system operates off of machine learning. You tell them exactly what you want. And it will give you what you’re looking for. Getting in its way is shooting yourself in the foot. And a lot of this has to do with increasing ad liquidity. Here’s a quick analogy to help you understand what I mean: Let’s say I wanted you to book me a flight to Europe. Then, you decide on your own to filter out Delta Airlines because you thought it wasn’t a good idea for me to fly with them. That’s what you think I might want, but in reality, you just: 1. Limited the amount of flights available. And as a result of that… 2. My prices go up. It’s similar with ad liquidity. You may think: - You should only target XYZ audience - Your customers are only on XYZ platform - You can only run ads during specific hours However, by doing that you’re limiting your total available audience. And there might be people outside of those constraints that would be a good buyer. But you can’t reach them because of these limitations you’ve set. We see this time and time again, and it’s one of the biggest mistakes hindering performance that is easily avoidable.

We're drowning in bad content. So many brands are pumping out articles and posts written by ChatGPT with no forethought or editing - all of it generic and unhelpful. Don't fall into the same trap with your marketing efforts. Good content requires a solid strategy, understanding your audience, and aligning your efforts to your growth stage. If you take the time to work through these (using AI as your copilot and not your replacement), you'll have content people actually want to read and an audience that drives demand.
