Non-alcoholic spirits and boba emerge as major beverage trends Younger consumers are driving significant growth in the non-alcoholic and boba beverage categories. The National Restaurant Association Show corroborated a trend we’ve been seeing for the past year or two now – beverage innovations are a big deal, and perhaps more than they’ve ever been. Indeed, there were 133 exhibitors filed under the “beverage” product category at this year’s show, versus 113 in 2023. Consumers have no doubt proven they want more beverage options. Consider Tropical Smoothie Café and Smoothie King, which both experienced double-digit sales growth in 2023, while startups HTeaO and Swig surged into Technomic’s Top 500 for the first time. Even McDonald’s is putting more skin in the game, launching its spinoff CosMc’s concept, which primarily sells beverages like iced lattes, slushes, frappes, teas, and more. And, as we’ve extensively covered already, a bevy of coffee players are coming in hot; Scooter’s Coffee opened 195 new units in 2023, Dutch Bros opened about 160, and 7 Brew opened about 140 for a whopping 350% increase over 2022. The Winery Job Index dropped 32% in June compared to last year, showing that hiring slowed down across the board, except for sales and marketing, which saw a little bump. Winemaking and production roles took the hardest hit, with a 41% drop, while direct-to-consumer jobs like tasting room staff also fell by 30%. It looks like wineries might be pulling back on hiring after going all out post-pandemic, with the index now at its lowest since 2020. Why do wine and distilled spirits products have to be in such specific sizes? Perhaps they don't for much longer... Distilled spirits-based RTD producers are hoping for a change here. The TTB is reopening the comment period for a proposed rule (Notice No. 210) published on May 25, 2022, which proposed changes to the authorized standards of fill for wine and distilled spirits, to solicit comments on additional suggestions raised in public comments made in response to Notice No. 210 that go beyond the scope of the original proposal. In Notice No. 210, TTB proposed to add 10 authorized standards of fill to those already authorized for wine, and alternatively, eliminating all but a minimum standard of fill for wine containers and all but a minimum and maximum for distilled spirits containers. Volume. As a raw material provider, if distillers aren't #distilling, drinkers aren't drinking, and #spirit sits in barrels longer than usual, there will be some significant whiplash on the back end. Consumables manufacturers for the spirit industry (#yeast, #malt, #grain, #nutrients, #enzymes, #oak, etc.) will feel it. I think the ACSA 2024 Craft Spirits Data Project info released recently has yet to be seen by some, so here are a few points worth noting: 1. The US craft spirits market volume decreased for the first time since the creation of this report in 2016. Volume decreased -3.6% to 13.5 million cases in 2023 (versus 14 million in 2022). 2. US craft spirits are losing overall market share. In 2023, the market share of US craft spirits in total US spirits decreased to 4.6% in volume, down from 4.9% in 2022. A lot can be done, from consumer education to federal legislation. Let's hope some investment in this space takes place soon.
