A large portion highlights content from Michael Schrage, Research Fellow w/ the MIT Sloan School of Management's Initiative on the Digital Economy. Also references a free course from Workday on AI and ML for Finance CFOs must understand the interpretability of AI models For CFOs, interpretability and explainability of AI are not a wish list item for another day - they are a regulatory imperative. As Schrage points out, the regulations will get more stringent as AI gets more powerful: It's absolutely critical that the CFO and the finance function understand the interpretability of the model and the explainability of its recommendations. The single most important reason why they're so important is legal, regulatory compliance. How can you demonstrate affirmatively or passively, that you're actually complying with the rule, complying with the law, complying with a recommendation? It's absolutely core for making AI integral to the business, that it's not a black box - that people can actually understand the underlying mechanisms and the underlying factors that justify and show that you're doing what you're supposed to be doing, in the way that you're supposed to be doing at it. The trick, however, is that it's not just about compliance. You're always asking the AI to do a bit more than simply follow the rule. You're asking the AI if you really want to get value from it, to generate an insight or a recommendation or a suggestion or a decision that will allow you to get greater value from the data or from the financial investment or capital that you're allocating. Other thoughts include: * Understand the difference: bias in AI models versus bias in training data * CFOs should not outsource master data and governance! * It's not just about data quality - it's about better data value * Use gen AI to rethink your KPIs Reed's takeaway: AI for finance goes beyond productivity...<and> there is a surprise of sorts here - one we should not overlook. What jumps out in Schrage's course material isn't just AI - it's the collaborative nature of today's finance leader...Most finance leaders know they need to get with the program on AI and automation - and that's non-negotiable. We are getting to the time where many of our kids are heading to college, high school or even preparing for their first job in the workforce. Two years ago, I wrote some points that I wished I knew going to college. Since then, Grant Shaffer is wrapping up his first year at Bain Consulting Group LTD and Griffin Shaffer just finished his summer internship at Dell Technologies. This was after he made the difficult (but right) decision to transfer back this past spring to the University of Texas at Austin from Bucknell University. So here again or my points of wisdom with a few new ones I have learned from my own kids' experience. 1. Always Be Networking. You will be amazed how so many people are willing to help you if there is a connection. Career advice, favors, classes to take, mentoring & many more! You have amazing networks & if your child has the proactiveness, your network will be willing to help. 2. Treat others the way you want to be treated. This should be fairly intuitive & yet, I have seen time & again where people talk down or minimize others. As a leader of teams, do you think your employees will go to battle for you if they don't respect who you are based upon how you treat them? 3. Don't skip classes. It is a lot harder to catch up if you miss a couple of classes & try to learn on your own. Don't cut corners!! 4. Get to know a couple of your professors that have an influence on your interests. Some of my professors like Dr Riley and Dr Sneppenger from MSU & Phil Zerrillo at UT. The first 2 helped & encouraged me to go to grad school & target a top 20 business school. Dr. Zerrillo helped a kid from Montana who was book smart but had no business experience. 5. Have fun & meet people from other parts of the country/world. Two of Griffin's best friends are now from Philly (William Pickering) and Annapolis (Will Hopkins). He has other friends now working on Wall Street (Conor McCusker) that helped mentor him his freshman year of lacrosse. There is probably no one I admire as much as Darryl Traweek for mentoring. 6. Get involved in various organizations. This will help with the networking and will help prepare you for interviews and job opportunities. 7. Help an underclassman out. You have been there before. Not knowing what to do or where your class is. You can make someone's day by a very small act of kindness. 8. Make an effort to call home at least once a week. Your parents want to know you are doing well and thriving once you leave the house. This is particularly important to all the moms out there! Right Leslie Shaffer? 9. When choosing a college or school, think through whether it is the right size, location, academics and people for you. Griffin loved Bucknell, his team and the academics but the location was not a good fit. All 4 need to be aligned to truly be happy. 10. Have fun. Don't stress. You can do that once you enter the workforce. College life should be about making memories and lifelong friends.
