What's the right role for agencies to play in helping brands select their attribution software? It's a great question, and one that many marketing teams are grappling with. The best agencies take a holistic and science-based approach to measurement. They understand the trade-offs between different measurement methodologies and can guide their clients through the implications of each. For example, they'll know when to use media mix modeling for planning and measuring channels that can't be tested experimentally, like podcasts or TV. They'll also develop an experimentation plan that prioritizes the right channels for testing. Importantly, they'll think about how to bring all these pieces together – MMM, experiments, digital tracking – to make the best decisions for the business. The most sophisticated teams see through agencies that just try to pick the measurement approach that makes them look best. Instead, they look for true partners who can help them do what's right for their company.

Pretty neat new feature. You can now access the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine directly from Google Search. I’m thinking this is probably going to expose some unexpected things about publishers, though. From tbe article: “To access this new feature, conduct a search on Google as usual. Next to each search result, you’ll find three dots—clicking on these will bring up the “About this Result” panel. Within this panel, select “More About This Page” to reveal a link to the Wayback Machine page for that website.”

Intensity of action is arguably the number one determinant of success. Being able to act upon information -- as fast as possible -- is a massive competitive advantage. I can't tell you how many companies, brands, and agencies I've worked with that move like molasses. One of the promises of AI and technological automation is the ability for us to reduce or eliminate "mundane" tasks. Some of these tools have proven significantly better than others, and the barrier to entry is lowering all the time. A mantra I like to live by is: "If there's a right answer, I don't want a human figuring it out." In the context of running a growth marketing program, that generally means asking discrete, objective questions. Things like: • Which week had the lowest CAC in the last year? • What was the total ad spend of that week? • What was the breakdown by channel? • What products did those first customers mostly buy? Those four useful questions might take someone 15-20 minutes (assuming their datastack is super organized and they have all of those dashboards, and maybe a passing knowledge of SQL). But now, having a conversation with your marketing data is getting easier and easier. I'm very well versed on the technologies and partners that are out there, and have seen some impressive things (MagicDash, Moby, Einstein, etc). This chart is a warning to agencies that primarily specialize in platforms. Plenty of agencies can just talk about your product or service on LinkedIn, Google, Meta, etc. That's not really marketing. We take a different approach at DSM. Our priority is understanding the target customer. We want to know what makes them tick. What are their questions, their objections, and their desired outcomes? One we have that, we can resonate with them via email, search, YouTube, TikTok...you name it. Platforms come and go. Who uses them and how they're used are constantly changing. Understanding your customer, on the other hand, is timeless. THAT'S the heart of marketing.

Women in Tech SEO and Aira released their 3rd annual State of Technical SEO Report on Friday and I had the privilege of being one of the expert contributors. The report is overflowing with great data and insights, but here are a few that stood out to me: 1️⃣ 70% of SEOs are worried about the impact of Search Generative Experience (SGE) on regular search results (although, as I noted “So much of the commentary has been from early adopters in the tech and SEO community and we're not exactly representative of how the rest of the world will use this.”)🚨 2️⃣ Technical debt and organizational lack of resources were the top two answers for the biggest risks to technical SEO success. Interestingly, those top two answers were reversed from last year’s report…maybe the technical debt is building up after months and years of struggling to get adequate resources? 👀 3️⃣ Conversions and organic traffic were the top two metrics that are most effective in measuring SEO performance. These two also swapped their top spots, so it seems like the SEO industry is realizing we have to do a better job at proving our value to the business💸 Did any numbers surprise you?
