PARTYNEXTDOOR'S manager Tyler Henry recently shared gems on working PND, OVO, & more. Here are 5 of my favorite takeaways: 1) How you do anything is how you do everything Tyler shares the story of how he got his start in the music industry while in college in California. One of his first opportunities was a result of connecting with Drake's tour manager Jamilio who asked Tyler for help working a party. Tyler took the job incredibly seriously and came with a team of people that were super on point: •Tyler & his team showed up early •Each person had an assigned role  •Everyone wore black outfits as a uniform Tyler treated it like the Super Bowl - Jamilio saw his execution and precision which led to more opportunities. How you do anything is how you do everything. 2) Preparation is key Tyler talks about wanting to understand who the key players were that worked with the artists he was either currently working with or wanted to work with. He made a spreadsheet of artist and manager contacts to help understand who everyone was, capitalize on opportunities, and meet as many people as possible. That preparation and understanding of who the key players were allowed him to recognize folks in person and capitalize on what would otherwise be small moments. For ex: while waiting in line for the bathroom, he recognized an agent from the spreadsheet he made and initiated a conversation that made a last impression. Tyler also talks about being asked to help tour manage a show on the West Coast one year. Tyler knew that show was 1 of 5 and instead of just packing a bag for that one show, he packed a bag for all 5 just in case he got asked to stay on. Preparation met opportunity when he was asked to stay on for all 5 shows and after being able to because he was prepared, that was how he met PARTYNEXTDOOR. 3) Opportunities create momentum One of the biggest takeaways from Tyler's story is how moments and opportunities snowball - there is momentum in capitalizing on opportunities as doors continue opening from one thing to the next. Doing a great job in one moment can help open the next door. 4) Hard work is necessary Tyler tells the story of how when PARTYNEXTDOOR went on his first tour with Drake, he didn't get caught up in the nightlife or partying. Every night after the show, he would work on music with a small handheld mic and continue to perfect his craft. That dedication helped Party make some of the music that eventually catapalted his career. 5) Understanding your artist Part of being a great manager is understanding your artist and the fact that every artist has their own nuance. What works for 1 artist might not work for another one in terms of strategy, opportunities, workflow, and work style. It's important to understand your artist and tailor to their specific needs. Haven't really been posting a ton lately... Been wrapped up with a bunch of projects with NDA's so can't really post just yet, but they have been exciting. I love getting calls to compose original music for projects... Which is why it's been such a pain point to see some of the ads I've been seeing in the political world lately (I won't name parties)... To my creative director/producer folks, if you're doing a $50 mil media buy - PLEASE use custom music. Music is NOT the place to save money... It's easily as important as your message, the unseen third actor, the emotion driver, the excitement tool. You're doing yourself and your client a disservice if your picking your music from *insert cheap subscription library here*... I've been doing this a LONG time, and I'm seeing a lot of productions lately that don't hit it emotionally, don't hit the edits, and leave the feeling of just being "ok". I hate to be the guy to complain, but feel like it's time the industry heard from the guys creating the scores. It's really not about the composer of the licensed track. It's about the creative director or editor that is all "yeah that works ok". Because then that's what you get... Just "ok" Call a composer. When you hear the “music makes your smarter” angle from music education advocates, don’t believe them. It’s not our best argument for music education. “Unfortunately, the majority of Music Education Advocacy (MAD) claims, campaigns, advertisements, and slogans about the values of school and community education are not based on broad, deep, extensive, ethical, or evidence-based research. For the most part, the claims of MAD writers and speakers are based on unsubstantiated, truthy assump­tions and opinions; sentimental testimonials by "stars" in various musical genres; and flawed, spotty, or inconclusive research. MAD slogans-such as "music makes you smarter:' "school music raises math scores:' and "music educates feeling" -often seduce teachers and the public into believing truthy MAD and the flawed research that's used to support MAD claims. But serious scholars have published numerous studies that have challenged many MAD claims.” - Music Matters II (Elliott & Silverman, 2014) Correlation ≠ Causation. Another 💣 “it's absurd to sug­gest that a central aim of music education is to prepare music students for financial success.” If you want to get good at finance, study finance. Sorry but “MAD is a political endeavor that uses marketing, salesmanship, and other forms of persuasion to obtain whatever advocates want in a given time and place, and to justify the status quo of school music programs with MAD campaigns of the latest political and educational priori­ties (e.g., boosting math and reading scores), whether or not these are musically and educationally justifiable.” As Bowman warns, we are at grave risk when we "turn over responsibility to professional persuaders whose interest in our instructional aims is subordinate to their determination to win resources, time, recognition, or whatever else is at stake” Start critically thinking for yourself. This is what I’ll be teaching Masters students at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music this week as they develop their own classroom management plan. And I’m here if you want to develop your own music education, as Neil Postman states so eloquently, “crap detector”.

Here’s a tip for songwriters; Choose chords that portray the emotion of the song. A song’s emotion could be happy, sad, exciting, frustrated, depressed, sorrowful, angry, hopeful, hopeless, encouraging, etc. You can’t be writing a song that is supposed to be used for celebration, for instance, and use sad/ moody chords. That just doesn’t fit. Ask yourself, “what’s the emotion of this song I’m writing”? Then choose chords that portray that kind of emotion. Usually, as musician, your musical instinct is enough for you to know the type of chords that don’t fit the message of your song. But there are also resources (even on the internet) to help you if you need some help. If people don't know you are looking for work, they can't help. If you hear of Anything that might be a good fit, I appreciate the passing along of my resume. Not everyone is posting their job openings, especially in the music industry. I thought it couldn't hurt to share my resume and some details about what I am seeking with my connections. Cultural Fit: - Respect for a well-rounded skill set. Can see how different functional role knowledge can serve in a particular role. I don't think because someone is multi-dimensional, that means they aren't focused or don't know what they like. - Remote job options. I live in Idaho but travel back to LA 1-2 a month. - Open to all options (fractional, contract, freelance, part-time, full-time). Sometimes there's an assumption that because I run my own company that I am not open to full-time work and that's not the case. - Role that allows opportunities to be challenged and grow. I have been in leadership and management as well as execution-based roles. I am an "all-hands on deck" type of gal. I am looking for an environment that actually stands by claims of DE&I, those who are not scared to put a woman in a more senior-level role. - I tend to thrive in start-up environments or with companies in growth stage where we move quickly. I look for those with innovative, forward-thinking ideas. About My Experience and Job Functions Seeking: -I have over 15 years in marketing, so it would behoove me to be open to positions where I can add that value to a company. But I have more to offer than this as you will see below. -Tech, Product & Data - I have served in Operations, Product Management & Data Analyst roles. I really enjoy this type of work and I feel that there is a strong need for the skill sets I bring here. -Music Coordinator/Music Admin/Sync Coordinator or a Composer's Assistant - I am a singer/songwriter and aspiring composer, so there is a creative side to me as well that longs to be nourished.
