[Dealing with Supplier Delays] Hey there, Navigating supplier delays is a common challenge in business. From 2017, I partnered with one of the nation's largest toy distributors. With over 30 years in the industry and a presence at the well known trade show, they were a trusted name. However, when COVID-19 hit, things took a turn for the worse. I had placed nearly $50,000 in pre-orders, but unfortunately, everything was delayed by 8-12 months. We were actively selling on Amazon FBA, and delayed shipments meant pricing shifts that made some of our products unprofitable. Additionally, shipping containers from China were priced at $4,000 each, but due to pandemic-related disruptions, costs soared to around $20,000 per container. With such tight margins and extended delays, fulfilling a $50,000 order became too risky. After waiting patiently for 3 months, we made the tough call to cancel the order, fortunately without any upfront payments. Despite this, the supplier insisted on charging us in full for goods that hadn't even arrived. That's when we discovered the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, also known as the 30-Day Rule. This rule ensures that businesses must either ship goods promptly or offer customers the option to cancel and receive a full refund if they cannot meet the promised timeline. Armed with this knowledge, we promptly informed our supplier about the FTC's 30-Day Rule. Understanding the ramifications, they canceled our order without further delay. It's crucial to remember that delays can happen with any distributor, even reputable ones. If your supplier fails to deliver within 30 days without prior notice, reminding them of the FTC rule can protect your financial interests. The LITTLE stuff Matters BIG. Product subcategory nuances get overlooked today. These gaps are where we find ways to win, so I hope my thoughts here helps some of you! Consumption format, packaging, ingredients, etc… Everything matters, and some way more than others, depending on the overall category. This is where the uniqueness for brands can really get granular. The trick is to do without confusing the customer! Instead, you have to lean into what you’re good at, but with unique points of differentiation — that solve the most important problems for the sub-demographic you’re targeting. It’s harder than it looks and I’m always amazed at what some of the great brands out there can do here. Some like C4, are inspiring. It all comes down to messaging and marketing what the differences are, and why you have these “other options”. What do my fellow cpg brand people think?? I’m really excited to share something new we’re doing at Perimeter Office Products. We’ve started using a cool tool in our HR portal that lets us send out quick surveys to our team members at important times, like when someone has just joined us for 30 days. This tool is a game changer because it helps us ask our new team members if they’re getting the right training, understanding everything they need to, and feeling good about their new roles. Before this, sitting down with everyone to ask these questions just wasn’t realistic. Thanks to this tool, we can now make sure everyone is on track and feeling great about their job, without taking up too much time. INVENTORS - What do you FEAR the most? For me way back when, it was the fear that I wouldn’t be able to get any retailers interested in my products. For others, it can be a host of things. Lack of money. No experience. Fear of someone copying your ideas. Not understanding the process including design and manufacturing and fulfillment. The list goes on… The GOOD NEWS is that most anyone can learn how to invent and then license or sell your products online or at retail. It’s not easy that’s for sure, but it’s doable and many people have succeeded in this highly competitive and technical business. Lean on fellow inventors. Watch videos and read articles from successful entrepreneurs and industry professionals. Even walk a trade show and see what others have to offer and talk to as many people as you can. #sleepwars Best sheets to date for a cool crisp feeling when you get into bed. Why continue to sleep with cotton that absorbs heat and moisture. We don’t use cotton to exercise go for a walk play golf tennis, etc. anymore.
