Thanksgiving Networking Thoughts....

As we approach Thanksgiving and look forward to a better 2021 propelled by the prospects of multiple COVID vaccines, I am grateful for everyone in my Linkedin network and our many positive interactions.

2020 has been a challenging year to say the least. I admire your grit, determination and positive outlook despite COVID's impact on your personal health, family and business. It reminds me of President Teddy Roosevelt's quote that "We must dare to be great; we must realize that greatness is the fruit of toil and sacrifice and high courage... For us is the life of action, of strenuous performance of duty; let us live in the harness, striving mightily; let us rather run the risk of wearing out than rusting out."

Based on recent conversations with people across industries and stage (employed, in transition, looking, etc.) and given the importance of networking, I'm hopeful we can elevate our collective game in 2021. My suggestions for improved networking are highlighted below.

  1. Be Empathetic. You may not have time for a networking call due to other commitments, especially in uncertain times. Be respectful and if at all possible let the person know that you are unable to connect but wish them all the best in their endeavors. A few kinds words can make an impact beyond our understanding.
  2. Do What You Say, Say What You Do. Very simply, if you promise to do something (introduction, etc), do it! One of the great problems in corporate recruiting is ghosting, that is not a best practice to embrace. Remember, you never know when it will be you on the other end of the phone - as my Dad said, be nice to people on the way up, you may meet them again on the way down.
  3. Be Respectful. When reaching out to network, look for ways to make it valuable 2-way conversation while keeping in mind that people are busy and may not have time to connect.

I look forward to your feedback and suggestions. In the meantime, I wish you and your family a healthy, safe and happy Thanksgiving!

This is spot on Brendan! I am always willing to see how I can help someone by making an intro, offering advice, etc. We all have the time to be nice and need to remember - what comes around, goes around. Thank you for sharing.
