  • Bulk Tank Contamination: The “Silent Killer”

    Fluid Power Journal

An article, published in the Journal's print edition and online, featuring a complete Bypass Filtration system supplied and installed by PIRTEK Centers in Chicago. The Precision Filtration System is a simple solution to remove dirt and other contaminants down to 1 micron, and 99.5% of water, reducing the formation of sulfuric acid which decreases the chance of wear and the frequency of component failure.

  • Geotechnical Instrumentation for Pipeline Infrastructure Protection (Abstract & Presentation)

Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists

It is estimated that 2.3 million miles of pipeline infrastructure, 140,490 miles of railroad track, and 84,000 dams, many with penstocks, exist in the United States. It is estimated that 2.3 million miles of pipeline infrastructure, 140,490 miles of railroad track, and 84,000 dams, many with penstocks, exist in the United States. Foundational to the health of the country, pipelines transport water, oil, natural gas, and other hydrocarbon-based resources. Demand requires that these resources often be pumped great distances through pipelines traversing slopes and irregular terrain, at times both remote and isolated. In such locations, developing or reactivated landslides may exist, threatening infrastructure.

Slope failures that damage pipelines can result in catastrophic environmental and economic impacts. Rapid responsiveness minimizes the impact of such events, and the presence of an Automated Data Acquisition System (ADAS) with remote monitoring capabilities at the site can enable action to be taken sooner. An ADAS can provide web based data charts and near-real-time email and text message alert notification of changing slope conditions. Preventative action can be taken if slope failure is gradual, or corrective action if failure is sudden.

Such remote monitoring systems have been implemented at a number of sites threatened by landslides, and because their implementation can reduce the negative impact of damage caused by slope failure, it is expected that they will be even more widely used to prevent possible catastrophes. A typical ADAS is comprised of a datalogger programmed to collect and analyze data from geotechnical instruments and a method of remote communication. Typical instruments include tilt sensors, water level sensors, soil moisture sensors, and settlement sensors. Typical communication systems include cell phone modems and integration with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
