"Afrotech is the future of the civil rights movement" This is what NAACP President Derrick Johnson said in the opening fireside chat with Afrotech Founder Morgan DeBaun The chat was an urgent call to action for the times that we're in. Here's what I think Derrick's words mean for us as tech leaders 1. Every business is a tech business 2. Every job is a tech job 3. Every political outcome has tech influence and tech implications 4. Afrotech helps tech leaders do more, get better, earn more 5. This helps companies do more, get better, earn more 6. This helps communities do more, get better, earn more 7. Communities create more equity, sustainable innovation, prosperity, health 8. These are also precisely what civil rights movements help achieve 9. #BlackLinkedIn has been my favorite corner of the internet lately 👀 The pipeline of conversations from Black media ➡ Black TikTok ➡ Black LinkedIn shows how insights travel digitally in a society that continues to merge personal and professional identities. In the past, when platforms have noticed this pipeline (RIP #BlackTwitter) they’ve found unique ways to participate in the conversation through ERGs and BRGs. Rarely do we see social media take an active interest in the celebration of these nuanced perspectives beyond the platform -- have you? This past week, I had the privilege of immersing myself in the magic of #AfroTech2024 —a space filled with innovation, inspiration, and, most importantly, collaboration. Walking into rooms buzzing with brilliant minds and limitless ideas, I didn’t just network—I connected. I met my “destiny helpers”—those incredible people who see potential, believe in possibility, and are willing to lend their guidance to help transform visions into reality. From casual conversations to intentional brainstorming sessions, I felt the power of community. #AfroTech reminded me that no matter how big my dreams are, they’re not meant to be built alone. Collaboration isn’t just about working together—it’s about walking the journey with people who believe in your greatness as much as you do. I leave this experience not only with new ideas but also with a renewed sense of purpose and confidence. Opportunities to elevate my career are now within reach, not just because of what I can do, but because of who I’m surrounded by. To anyone else who walked away from #AfroTech inspired: let’s continue to build, connect, and grow. Navigating the tech scene has been a real journey. Writing my book, She Disrupts, brought tears as I saw many Black women suffering and I understood the long-term impact of oppressive algorithms. Today, I won’t cry because my book explains why Black women must thrive in today’s tech industry. The recent dismantling of DEI practices within companies like Microsoft, Zoom, Google, and Meta reflects broader market impacts. Post-pandemic economic pressures, inflation, and market volatility have driven companies to cut DEI initiatives to maximise shareholder value. AI tools can mitigate this by ensuring diverse teams are engaged from the onset. Political climates also play a significant role. In the UK, shifts between conservative and Labour governments influence DEI policies and priorities. Regulatory changes and political debates create uncertainty for DEI programs, discouraging companies from pursuing them due to potential legal challenges. Technological advancements, especially in AI, have revealed biases that exacerbate inequalities if not addressed. Despite societal demands for greater inclusion, DEI efforts are reduced, driven by short-term financial priorities. This is my recommendation, Black women should invest in personal branding and visibility within their industry by leveraging social media, attending conferences, and speaking at events. My book emphasises the importance of visibility and personal branding in overcoming systemic barriers. Organisations must commit to transparent reporting on DEI efforts, publishing data on workforce diversity, promotion rates, and pay equity. Transparency fosters trust and accountability, ensuring DEI remains a priority. Full Circle Moments Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to do a quick interview with Keshia Neal, M.Ed. while at AFROTECH, who shared how my story and posts inspired her on her journey to break into tech.
