Growing Tomatoes 🤝 Growing Cannabis Many avid #gardeners aren’t aware that cannabis plays well with many other plants, creating a symbiotic growing relationship. Tomato plants are one of those plants! With tomato season on the horizon, we thought this would be a great opportunity to discuss the benefits of growing tomatoes alongside your cannabis plants: 🍅 They Follow Similar Growth Schedules After germination, both cannabis and tomato plants go through vegetation, flowering, and fruiting stages. During vegetation, they both experience high growth and need high levels of macronutrients like nitrogen for optimal leaf, root, and stem development. This makes Reefertilizer an excellent choice for both plants during this phase. With the right conditions, both plants will then advance to the flowering/fruiting stage. Proper fertilization at every stage improves plant health, growth, and yield. 🍅 They Require Similar Nutrients Tomatoes and cannabis have similar nutrient needs during the vegetation stage, so you can use the same macronutrient-rich fertilizer for both. As soon as they begin to blossom, however, nutrient requirements change slightly. Cannabis requires magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and sulfur. Tomatoes, on the other hand, require calcium and humic acids to thrive during this stage. While these plants thrive well together, their differing nutrient needs during the flowering stage mean it’s best to avoid planting them in the same container. 🍅 Other Considerations If you grow these plants together, ensure that both have adequate sunlight and that one doesn’t shade the other. Additionally, it’s important to remove any fallen tomatoes to avoid soil acidity issues. And don’t worry, tomatoes won’t absorb THC from cannabis plants—they’re perfectly safe to eat. — Ready to start growing? 💚California Senators Approve Bill To Let 🌿Marijuana Growers Sell Directly To Consumers At Farmers Markets! California senators have advanced an Assembly-passed bill that would allow regulators to issue a new license allowing small 🌿marijuana growers to sell their products directly to consumers at state-organized farmers markets and other temporary events. The legislation from Assemblymember Gail Pellerin (D) was unanimously approved in the Senate Appropriations Committee in a 💚4-0 vote on Thursday. Adults would also be able to consume cannabis on-site at approved events. If 🌿approved, it will still need to go back to the Assembly for concurrence on Senate amendments, including one stipulating that the licensee can only sell and allow on-site consumption at “state temporary events.” The original language was broader, permitting such activity at “specified temporary events.” The ❤️Senate Appropriations Committee also amended the legislation to delay implementation until January 1, 2026. Local jurisdictions would need to consent to allowing the events in order for a license to be granted. Applicants wishing to obtain the state temporary events license would also need to meet the definition of a small marijuana producer. California has initiated a state-funded project to analyze the genetic information of various marijuana strains, with the goal of preserving the state’s rich cannabis cultivation history, particularly in legacy regions like the Emerald Triangle. The project, titled “Legacy Cannabis Genetics: People and Their Plants, a Community-Driven Study,” is a collaboration between several organizations, including the Origins Council, California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, the University of California, Berkeley, LeafWorks, and the United CORE Alliance. This initiative, which began in 2022 and is set to conclude in 2026, aims to legally protect the genetic resources of legacy cannabis breeders and cultivation communities, ensuring that these valuable strains are recognized and safeguarded as intellectual property🔒. The project employs a community-based participatory research (CBPR) model, which ensures that historical cannabis-growing communities are actively involved in the research process. This approach includes genetic sequencing of cannabis strains, gathering oral histories, and developing educational resources focused on the intellectual property of cannabis genetics. The initiative is particularly significant for its focus on social equity, as it seeks to empower marginalized communities, including those affected by past cannabis law enforcement, ensuring they can participate and benefit from the legal cannabis industry💼. The findings from this research are expected to support the development of California’s Cannabis Appellations Program, which aims to regulate and protect legacy cultivation regions similar to how regional wines are protected in France. Additionally, the project could address ongoing issues with the accuracy of cannabis strain labeling, leading to more transparent and reliable information for consumers. Organic Cannabis?!? CCOF certifies (legal) cannabis in California to "OCal," a state standard designed to mirror the national organic standards. Cannabis remains ineligible for USDA organic certification, but OCal-certified Cannabis is held to the same level of oversight and production standards. Whatever your personal opinions may be, cannabis is a staple crop in California with a horrific track record of toxic pesticide use and damaging environmental practices. OCal distinguishes cannabis farmers who are committed to organic principles and safe production practices. In particular, our Board of Directors carefully considered medical cannabis consumers and their potential for chemical exposures when deciding to certify to this new California standard. For those watching the legislative evolution in California, including a ban that would unfairly decimate the hemp category, possibly to include nutraceutical's like CBD, there is much to discuss and consider. Although some are blaming an unrestricted cash-grab, the human-element is being overlooked almost entirely. There is far too much research and documented evidence to support the advancement of high-quality, tested hemp-derived products for people and pets. The recent ruling upholding the unnecessary restrictions for hemp-derived products is a reflection of disconnected legislators, aligned with partisan lobbyists for the sole purpose of protecting the marijuana market. Department of Cannabis Control’s ‘inadequate oversight’ of $100M undermined California's licensing program for cannabis growers, according to California State Auditor Grant Parks. Parks determined the DCC ‘weakened’ the Local Jurisdiction Assistance Grant (LJAG) Program. The state’s LJAG Program, approved by the California Legislature in June 2021, provided the one-time funding source to aid thousands of small, legacy and equity cannabis businesses in complying with a state environmental mandate, which would enable them to transition from provisional to more permanent annual licenses. The whole provisional licensing program is “kaput” at the end of 2025, meaning cannabis cultivators who haven’t transitioned to annual licensure will find themselves up a certain creek with no paddle, Executive Director Genine Coleman of Origins Council -- a nonprofit that advocates for roughly 900 small, independent cannabis businesses and homestead farming families, primarily in the rural areas of Northern California -- told CBT.
