You're failing your first sales hires. It's just not working. The transfer of knowledge from a founder to the first sales rep is brutal. A few things to consider: 1. Reps don’t sell the way a founder does. Do you have a path to success with the motion you run? 2. Which do you hire first? SDR or AE? More often than not, founders are looking for generalists. The strong up and comer SDR or newly promoted AE is a safer bet but will you’ll have a skill set gap on closing. Consider which gap you can fill more for them, lead generation or closing skills 3. Document as much of the sales motion as you can before they get there. Period. 4. These first hires are now your full time job. Don’t forget that. Cutting em loose and checking in every so often won’t work. 5. If you haven’t run the entire sales motion yourself at least 10-15 times, don’t expect anyone else to. What did I miss? B2B enterprise sellers, here are 3 things you can do to immediately start making more money than you could ever do alone. 1. Find a good VAR partner to work with. 2. Leverage them to help you find and close deals. 3. Repeat. Here's what you're likely doing instead. 1. Trying to sell direct. 2. When a customer asks if you work with channel partners, you reluctantly say yes. 3. You bring them in at the last minute and expect them to just take their cut and be happy. Here's why that's a problem. 1. VAR partners are loyal to a fault. If you don't bring them in early on in the sales process, they'll never trust you and will be hesitant to bring you into their accounts. 2. By not involving them in the entire sales process, you've essentially made them a commodity. There's no value add for the partner and they have no reason to be loyal to you. PSA for your 2025 plan: it's not an ICP-focused go-to-market if you don't have a list of target accounts in your ICP. It's tempting to spend 99% of your time on *engaging* accounts and only 1% of your time on *picking* accounts in the first place. I think that's a mistake. What it leads to: -- Generic & stale account lists -- Over-indexing on industry & company size for selecting accounts (don't get me started on off-the-shelf industry classification data...) -- Missing 1st/3rd party signals (ex: hiring activity, champion movement) that would allow you to run relevant campaigns to these accounts -- Little/no back-testing on whether these accounts are predictive of where you have the best chance to win & retain -- No buy-in between marketing, product, sales, sales dev and CS -- Garbage in, garbage out My (unsolicited) advice: dedicate (more) time/resources to your target account program. Bonus points if you: 1. Treat it like a program, not a one-off 2. Align the team 3. How do you make ~$57K in sales in 3 months? Especially when you have: i) a dormant email list of ~16K subscribers ii) been emailing them once a month iii) Occasionally make some sales Here’s exactly how I did it for this client: Week 1-3: → 4-part re-engagement email sequence → Clear expectations set for future emails → A feedback loop to collect data → 6,346 subscribers stayed, rest were deleted Week 4-10: → 7 emails sent, one per week → 3 emails were for shifting beliefs → 2 emails were personal experience narratives → 2 emails were educational (thru client case studies) Week 11-12: → 8-part sales sequence for an existing offer → Overall 116 people bought @ $499 → ~1.82% conversion Yes, the conversion could have been better. But the client was happy, so! That wasn’t all. Some other things that we did: • Spoke to previous buyers to gain some insights  • Split-tested a bunch of different angles The lesson? Sometimes, untapped revenue is sitting right in front of you. By: a) Setting clear expectations & feedback loops b) Reconnecting with your audience authentically c) Delivering what they need (that would help them) You can revive your list and boost sales dramatically.
