What are common networking mistakes and how can you avoid them?
As a person who struggles with ADD this topic is difficult for me. I mentioned in another comment that I do my best networking when I am not desperate for work. A part of why this is true is because when I have work I am calmer and I definitely feel more generous. Part of living a truly generous life is being generous with your listening and engaging with the person. I have to respectfully disagree that networking is all about the other person. Networking should be mutually beneficial so not talking at all is probably not any better than doing all of the talking. There should be a balance. I strongly believe that if you listen with the purpose of engaging in conversation with no ulterior motives, genuine conversation will ensue.

What are common networking mistakes and how can you avoid them?
Most of my networking is one on one so I am looking to find ways to connect with the individual on a personal level. Website profiles are my number 1 place since they are really trying to be personable there. I too look at LinkedIn profiles but I find that people are trying to tell you what they do on their LinkedIn profile instead of telling you who they are as a person. Having long standing networking partners who think of you when there’s an opportunity to recommend someone in your field is built on trust. In my experience, trust has been built on having a personal connection with the person. Knowing the names of their spouse and children and such build the trust. I only recommend folks I trust and expect that is the case for most.

What are common networking mistakes and how can you avoid them?
I have found that I do my best networking when my work is going well. The old saying “it’s easier to get a job when you have a job.” I think the same applies to networking. If you don’t ‘need work right now’ then you will be able to do all of the things others above have suggested. You will be able to be generous with your words, thoughts, ideas, counsel, connections…. My definition of generosity is the giving of something with no expectation of anything in return. I try to be generous when things are lean but I find it much easier to act generously when things are going well.
