NUGGETS FOR PASTORS AND CHURCH LEADERS - PART 14 THE PASTOR/CHURCH LEADER AND HIS CONGREGATION - A INTRODUCTION In our contemporary setting, a pastor is either working under an organization or as an individual. It is imperative for every pastor working within a structured denomination to: • Obey the leaders above you • Work or cooperate with your peers • Accord respect to those below your rank • Respect the constitution and by-laws of the organization. In any case, the congregation that you're leading must see you as the following and be responsible as such: YOUR RESISTIBILITIES 1. YOU'RE A BISHOP OF THAT CONGREGATION: In this case, you're the overseer, superintendent, chief administrator, and manager and so you're required to exhibit leadership and managerial skills to run a church. Your congregation must see these skills in you to follow you. People don't follow leaders who are not skilled in their field of work. This is not optional but a required skill. If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church? 1 Timothy 3:5 2. YOU'RE AN ELDER IN YOUR CONGREGATION: As an elder, you're required to exercise wisdom, experience, and authority in your duty. In the New Testament, an elder can be an older personality or a leader of a church. So an elder in this case is not an older person in the church but a leader of the church who must exhibit maturity. Even though you may not necessarily have "grey hair" you must exhibit wisdom. You must be seen and honored as a father who is living above reproach. Ask for wisdom from God and apply it always. Don't make childish decisions but let maturity be seen in your decisions. Also demonstrate godly authority, that is, don't be timid. Be in control of the leadership of the local church. Allow others to help you but don't relegate your authority as a pastor to another. • 6. He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. 7. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap. 1 Timothy 3:6-7 3. YOU'RE A PASTOR OF YOUR CONGREGATION: As a pastor, you're the Shepherd of the flock that has been entrusted to you and so you must feed the people with the Word of God, guide them in the right path using the Word of God, protect them from going astray and becoming prey to the evil one. You must always be there for the congregation. You must know all your sheep and they must know you. Have an intimate relationship with all of them. • 2.
