Does restoration support local wildlife? 🐾 Let's see! 🤝🏼 WildMon is partnering with IPÊ - Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas, Universidade Federal de São Carlos - UFSCar Oficial, and NEEDS to track restoration progress over space and time, to understand how such regeneration or reforestation efforts support local wildlife and facilitate their return to 3 biomes: Amazon (Pará and Maranhão), Cerrado (Mato Grosso do Sul), and Altantic Forest (Bahia and Espírito Santo). This project will utilize #ecoacoustics and #eDNA to holistically understand different taxonomic groups from birds and mammals to insects and fungi. Two weeks ago, I spoke to University students at SNiC (Stichting Nationaal informatica Congres)'s SustainabilIT Conference about WildMon’s work. It was a rainy day—perfect for staying indoors and diving into meaningful discussions about nature technology and conservation applications. The students were especially engaged when I played a sound clip from Brazil, showcasing how ecoacoustics can reveal and track rare species in ecosystems. The Q&A session was filled with thoughtful questions, one that stood out was about how we address the resource-intensive nature of AI in conservation—a challenge we and everyone using AI needs to take seriously. I hope these students pursue career pathways that improve AI's sustainability and conservation outcomes. I’m grateful to the organizers Dionne Gantzert Charlotte Hoogteijling, students, and a rockstar moderator Karen van der Zanden for making it an unforgettable experience and allowing me to share how IT expertise and tools can help biodiversity. #biodiversity #speaker #sustainability #naturetech #wildmon #AI

Excited to share Wildmon.ai's latest blog on how bioacoustic monitoring is being used to assess the impact of rubber agroforestry on wildlife in Thailand. 🦉🌱 This represents but a step in laying to rest the toxic and prevailing myth that humans and humanity are defacto "bad" for the Earth. This narrative drives further isolation, extraction, and separation of humanity from the soil and web of life we're intimately dependent upon... more on that in another post! In this project, we're actively tracking three key groups: monoculture rubber, diversified Wanakaset agroforestry (our farmer partners), and secondary forests. Our aim is to quantify the species abundance and richness of each system, exploring how similar - in terms of complexity - agroforestry can map against secondary forests. This work demonstrates how technology and ecological stewardship increasingly intersect, providing crucial insights into relationship and potential of regenerative agroforestry as a driver in supporting the Earth's innumerable inhabitants.
