When it comes to clean, renewable energy sources, nuclear fusion could be our best bet. This week, Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) announced that it would build the world’s first grid scale-commercial fusion power plant, known as ARC, in Virginia (https://lnkd.in/dKGtXRjX). Currently CFS, in collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, is working to build a prototype fusion machine, SPARC, in Devens, Massachusetts, that will pave the way for ARC. We are providing structural design and mass-concrete thermal modeling services to HDR and contractor support services to BOND Building Construction for the 170,000-square-foot research facility (pictured) that houses the high-field tokamak machine. To learn more about our work on SPARC, check out our website. https://lnkd.in/dkyb2wbK

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has unveiled the design for its new Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Wing, which will increase gallery space by nearly 50%. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural design services for the project, designed by Frida Escobedo (Taller Frida Escobedo). The five-story, 126,000-square-foot wing will preserve the building’s historical footprint and honor the museum’s architectural legacy while addressing sustainability, accessibility and infrastructure improvements. Visitors to the new wing, which will house 20th- and 21st-century art, will also enjoy sweeping views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline from indoor and outdoor spaces, including an expanded rooftop garden. Construction is set to begin in 2026, with an opening planned for 2030. From a model green school targeting a 40 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions to the retrofit of a rooftop cooling unit with novel liquid desiccant technology, several innovative ideas for addressing decarbonization in the built environment were on display at the Wells Fargo Innovation Incubator (IN2) inaugural Scalable Tech Track program’s final showcase this week. The event was held in Golden, Colorado, at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, which administers and houses the program. Thornton Tomasetti Managing Principal and Senior Advisor Tom Scarangello had the tough task of serving as one of the judges for the program, created in collaboration with Overlay Capital, that awards grants to early-stage clean technology entrepreneurs to accelerate adoption. These IN2 clean tech ideas will help address today’s climate challenges and position us for a better tomorrow. Well done to all who took part in the presentations! You can never be too thankful, or have too many excuses to enjoy good food and great company. Our U.S. offices embraced this fully by hosting “Friendsgiving” events throughout November. Whether it was a cherished family recipe, a dish close to someone’s heart, something store-bought, or catered, staff across the firm came together to share meals and reflect on what they’re thankful for this year. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday filled with delicious food—and plenty of leftovers to enjoy all weekend. Happy Thanksgiving! #Thanksgiving #Thanksgiving2024

As we enter the season of giving, two of our offices already got a head start at this year’s Canstruction Global HQ events. The annual design-build competition brings together architecture, construction and engineering industry professionals to combat hunger by creating original sculptures out of non-perishable goods, which are later donated to local charities. It was cans of tuna in Bean Town—3,344 of them—as Thornton Tomasetti teamed up with Annum Architects (Formerly Ann Beha Architects) to build the Statue of Liberty's torch. Titled “TUNited We Stand, Divided We Trawl,” the Boston team’s work earned the People’s Choice and Structural Integrity awards. The disassembled cans were donated to Merrimack Valley Food Bank, Inc. after the competition. Meanwhile in New York, City Harvest collected 4,630 cans thanks to our team’s “Star Wars”-inspired creation, “Hunger: The Empire City Strikes Back.” Featuring a TIE fighter ship and R2-D2 robot, it earned an Honorable Mention from the judges. Well done to everyone who donated their time and talents this year!

Two major developments that recently topped out in Center City—a state-of-the-art office tower and a sprawling life sciences lab—are reshaping Philadelphia’s skyline. Set to be insurance company Chubb’s largest North American office, 2000 Arch Street (pictured at top) is an 18-story, 550,000-square-foot tower built on a former parking lot. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural engineering services to Stantec for the project, developed by Parkway Corporation. Turner Construction Company is the general contractor. Designed to LEED Platinum standards, the building will house 3,200 employees, including at least 1,250 new positions. Completion is scheduled for 2026. Thornton Tomasetti is also providing structural engineering services for 3201 Cuthbert Street, the city’s largest life sciences building. RAMSA | Robert A.M. Stern Architects is the design architect, Kendall/Heaton Associates, Inc. is the architect of record and Hunter Roberts Construction Group is the general contractor. Developed by Gattuso Development Partners, the 11-story, 520,000-square-foot tower will offer a mix of specialized research, laboratory and office space for academic and commercial use. Other features include expanded 16- to 24-foot floor-to-floor heights, a column-free lobby, fourth-floor landscaped terrace with a two-story covered loggia below and rooftop outdoor terrace/event space topped by a steel canopy. Targeting LEED Gold certification, the project is on track for shell completion in March 2025. Tenants will include Drexel University and SmartLabs.

When we last checked in on our New York Yankees fans, there was excitement in the air and a certainty that their hometown baseball team would emerge victorious against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. While the first game was a close one, the Dodgers ultimately pulled through and went on to win the next two games as well. There was a valiant comeback by the Yankees in Game 4, but the momentum didn’t carry into Game 5, where the Dodgers clinched the title of 2024 World Series Champions. But fair is fair, and while our New York office Yankees fans might have nothing nice to say about the Dodgers right now, they’re gracious enough to make good on the terms of the bet with our Los Angeles office, where the loser must don the apparel of the winning team for a photo. When you don’t want to be seen in the enemy’s colors, it’s helpful to have Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani fatheads on hand. Congratulations to our Los Angeles staff, who watched the Dodgers' victory parade from our office, but maybe don’t get too comfortable. When asked about the tough loss, New York Executive Assistant Yacenia Young said, “See you next year. Well, I don’t know if the Dodgers will make it back to the World Series, but the Yankees will sure be there.”
