Game-Changing Breakthrough in Pediatric Brain Cancer Therapy A Stanford Medicine clinical trial, co-led by Dr. Crystal Mackall and Dr. Michelle Monje, has achieved what was once thought impossible: a CAR-T cell therapy targeting GD2 protein has shown unprecedented success in treating diffuse midline gliomas, one of the deadliest childhood brain cancers. 💡 The Breakthrough: Target: GD2 protein on tumor cells, a novel approach for these aggressive cancers. Impact: 9 out of 11 children in the trial saw significant benefits, including tumor shrinkage and neurological improvement. Remarkable Outcome: One child’s tumor completely disappeared and has remained undetectable for four years post-treatment! Dr. Empey is a true leader in #pharmacogenomics and precision medicine. As the Associate Director for Pharmacogenomics at the Institute for Precision Medicine UPMC at University of Pittsburgh, he has spearheaded transformative initiatives like the PreciseRX and Test2Learn programs, advancing the integration of pharmacogenomics into clinical practice, research, and education. He also directs the @University of Pittsburgh–Thermo Fisher Scientific Pharmacogenomics Center of Excellence, where his team is deploying population-scale preemptive pharmacogenomic testing to over 150,000 patients in western Pennsylvania.
