Game-Changing Breakthrough in Pediatric Brain Cancer Therapy
A Stanford Medicine clinical trial, co-led by Dr. Crystal Mackall and Dr. Michelle Monje, has achieved what was once thought impossible: a CAR-T cell therapy targeting GD2 protein has shown unprecedented success in treating diffuse midline gliomas, one of the deadliest childhood brain cancers.
💡 The Breakthrough:
Target: GD2 protein on tumor cells, a novel approach for these aggressive cancers.
Impact: 9 out of 11 children in the trial saw significant benefits, including tumor shrinkage and neurological improvement.
Remarkable Outcome: One child’s tumor completely disappeared and has remained undetectable for four years post-treatment!
This achievement marks a monumental leap in precision medicine, offering new hope for families facing these devastating diagnoses.

At PMWC 2025 (Feb 5-7), we’re diving into similar innovations in Track 1, Gene and Cell Therapies in Oncology, co-hosted with Labcorp. This full-day agenda will feature sessions on cutting-edge advances, including mRNA vaccines and CAR T-cell therapies, chaired by Richard Klausner (Altos Labs), with esteemed speakers like Drew Weissman (Penn Medicine), Ira Mellman (formerly Genentech), and Crystal Mackall (Stanford). Next-generation ADCs led by Sandhya Girish (Gilead Sciences), Allogeneic cell therapy innovations with Elliot Norry (Adaptimmune), and stem cell and gene therapy breakthroughs chaired by Catriona Jamieson (UCSD Health).
We’re proud to announce that Dr. Crystal Mackall will be honored with the PMWC Luminary Award at 9am on February 6th during Track 1. Dr. Mackall, the Ernest and Amelia Gallo Family Professor and Founding Director of the Stanford Center for Cancer Cell Therapy, has developed advancements in CAR-T cell therapy, including innovative clinical trials and improved treatment protocols that have significantly enhanced patient outcomes in pediatric oncology.
🗓️ Event Dates: February 5-7, 2025 📍
