𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 PLATINA4Action 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 The last thematic session at the First Platina4Action Stage Event delivered a thought-provoking panel discussion on deploying zero-emission solutions for IWT. Moderated by Daisy Rycquart (Expertise- en InnovatieCentrum Binnenvaart), the panel featured esteemed speakers: Muhammed Elemenler (European Commission - DG MOVE), Marc Vanderhaegen (CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency), Almar van Herk (KOTUG International), Koen van Eig (Zero Emission Services), Pieter Huyskens (Damen), and Marnix Vos (Nedcargo). After an overview of the most promising technologies in the IWT sector and their alignment with EU Taxonomy and emission reduction targets, among other discussion on innovative technologies, the panel engaged in an in-depth discussions on the success and failure factors of new technologies. The conversation highlighted critical conditions for success, potential points of failure, and strategies to overcome these challenges. This session offered valuable insights into strategies for implementation, available financial instruments, and the actions needed to break through adoption barriers, all with the EU's ambitious emission targets in sight. The sessions then turned to the activities of the Work Packages of PLATINA4Action, with Severin Fraundorfer (viadonau), who updated the participants on the evaluation and implementation enhancement of NAIADES-III Actions. Prof. Edwin van Hassel University of Antwerp - Faculty of Business and Economics), highlighted the contribution of Digital Twin technology in policy assessment, offering valuable insights for shaping the future of IWT. The day was opened by Janeta TOMA, General Manager of the European Inland Waterway Transport Platform, setting the tone for this crucial event for IWT sector. Martin Quispel , Project Coordinator, from the Expertise- en InnovatieCentrum Binnenvaart (EICB), followed with an overview of PLATINA4Action’s objectives, scope, progress, and strategic framework, emphasizing the project’s critical role in driving sustainable innovation. The opening sessions proceeded with two enlightening and complementary keynotes: the first from Hugues Van Honacker, Team Leader for Inland Navigation Policy at the European Commission - DG MOVE, who outlined EU policy priorities for waterborne transport and zero-emission solutions, followed by Christiaan VAN LANCKER, President of the European IWT Platform, who highlighted the policy requirements from the industry perspective and the need for enhanced collaboration. At the moment, participants are engaged in a panel discussion on the EU Transport Agenda, examining how policy priorities align with IWT sector needs. Experts from EU institutions and key industry representativesm including Hugues Van Honacker (European Commission, DG MOVE) Manfred Seitz (Danube Commission), Theresia Hacksteiner (European Barge Union), Christiaan Van Lancker (European Skipper’s Organisation), Karin De Schepper (Inland Navigation Europe), Godfried Smit (European Shippers' Council), and Jaap Gebraad (WaterborneTP) are sharing insights on IWT’s vital role in Europe’s sustainable transport ambitions.
