Accelerating #carbonremoval via the CDR Launchpad! One of the key “sprints” of Mission Innovation Carbon Dioxide Removal Mission is our #CDR Launchpad. #Costreductions through learning-by-doing can take decades – and we don’t have the luxury of time! The CDR Launchpad encourages countries to go beyond R&D and build projects to help the global CDR community accelerate learning: ➡ Member countries are committing to building at least one 1,000+ tonne per year CDR project by 2025, ➡ Members agree to fund CDR R&D and pilots, ➡ Members share data and key learnings from projects. Through the Launchpad, we want to 1️⃣ Showcase projects and their successes to inspire further projects, 2️⃣ Accelerate the pace of demonstration-scale technological CDR projects in a variety of climates and operating conditions, and share data from these projects to accelerate global learning-by-doing, 3️⃣ Demonstrate commitment to CDR as an essential method for reaching net zero emissions, 4️⃣ Drive Political attention on the importance of building technological CDR projects, 5️⃣ Encourage ministers and decision-makers to be #champions for CDR! News 📰: SMART CDR Competition selects semi-finalists! During last week's #CEM15MI9, we were pleased to announce that the Mission Innovation Carbon Dioxide Removal Mission SMART CDR (Student Monitoring and Reporting Technology for Carbon Dioxide Removal) Competition received 78 project proposals from student teams representing 27 countries. An esteemed global panel of 24 carbon removal experts have now reviewed and selected 24 semi-finalist teams that will advance their projects in the coming months, with support from 20 global mentors. Thanks to our volunteer evaluation panel, the Mission can now announce the 24 semi-finalist teams that have made it through the first round of evaluations! We are excited to see these projects develop and the impact they’ll have on global CDR monitoring, verification, and reporting. 📢 #CEM15MI9 update! Thursday 3 October was a busy day - THE ministerial day of Clean Energy Ministerial and Mission Innovation. Here's what we contributed: ➡ During MI’s first-ever (and really inspiring!) Innovation Forum, Assistant Secretary Brad Crabtree of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) was joined on stage by Doug Rae of Carbon Engineering, to discuss the progress with first industrial-scale direct air capture #DAC project #Stratos, which will remove half a MILLION tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere once operational! Doug also stressed the importance of continued early-stage R&D investment and international collaboration. ➡ Together with Clean Energy Ministerial CCUS Initiative, the Carbon Dioxide Removal Mission co-hosted a ministerial roundtable on accelerating carbon management. Ministers and senior officials from eleven CEM countries were joined by industry and international organisations to highlight progress and policy push for #carbonmanagement, as well as the need for deeper international collaboration. ➡ During the RT, the Carbon Dioxide Removal Mission and Clean Energy Ministerial CCUS Initiative launched a new joint “Gigatonne by 2030" Campaign, to strengthen international collaboration in accelerating carbon management solutions to gigatonne scale by 2030. ➡ The CDR Launchpad is the Mission’s flagship project. Together, Launchpad members have invested in 30 carbon removal pilot and demonstration projects, each removing at least 1,000 tonnes per year, a crucial step towards achieving net zero emissions.
