ILO Group was built on a simple, shared mission: to roll up our sleeves and do whatever it takes to support K-12 system leaders’ big bets—from continuing to respond to student needs exacerbated by the pandemic to supporting all students thriving as we look ahead. We’re a proudly women-owned education strategy and policy firm. Our name, ILO Group, stands for In the Life Of: we work side-by-side with the country’s leading educators, experts, and government partners to help solve the toughest challenges facing school systems and leaders today–because we’ve been in their shoes. With decades of collective experience, our seasoned team of consultants has supported many of the nation’s largest and highest-profile school systems and education-focused organizations. BIG NEWS: The Nation’s Report Card, #NAEP24, will be released January 29, 2025! This is more than just a test—it’s a vital measure of how well our schools serve students across the country. It provides data to guide policy, chart progress, and ensure every student has the chance to succeed. On January 29, 2025, we’ll find out how U.S. students are doing in reading and math in 4th and 8th grade based on the only common benchmark used nationwide: The Nation’s Report Card. When we last released the National Assessment of Education Progress math and reading scores in October 2022, the results were something of a gut punch. U.S. students experienced historic achievement declines following the pandemic's unprecedented impact on education — nationally and in every state (with the exception of Department of Defense schools).   Research shows low scores have huge implications for student well-being and success. These include negative economic impacts, declines in high school graduation and college enrollment rates, and increases in teen pregnancy and arrests.   Given what's at stake, I'd like to share what I'll be looking for in the upcoming #NAEP release.

The Nation's Report Card will be out Jan. 29th. Here's what I'll be looking for in the results.

Contrary to what AI Doomers would have you believe, 97% of Ed-Tech Leaders believe that AI will have a very positive impact on education and more than 1 in 3 districts have a Generative AI initiative. However, it is important that AI is a tool, and every tool has its uses and misuses. AI is no exception. We must understand both the positive and negative impacts that the widespread adoption of AI can have on education. The following guest post is written by Julia Rafal-Baer and Laura Smith of the ILO Group- who are all experts in tech, education, and policy. It presents a balanced view of the possible impact of AI on education- covering both the pros and cons. The article ends with actionable insights that education leaders should take to ensure their schools can benefit from AI while mitigating the risks. If these ideas interest you, check the article out here- https://lnkd.in/dx-wRE6e

  • READ: Our Dr. Julia Rafal-Baer's and AiLO Lead Laura Smith's guest blog in Devansh Devansh's Artificial Intelligence Made Simple on #AI implementation in #K12 education: the risks, the opportunities, & the way #edleaders can take thoughtful steps forward.

#AI in K-12 education is here, and it’s poised transform learning, operations, and decision-making in schools. But with great potential comes great responsibility for mitigating risk to maximize AI’s benefits. In a new guest blog on Devansh Devansh’s Artificial Intelligence Made Simple Laura Smith and I talk risk mitigation, opportunities, and what leaders must do to harness AI safely. Read the full piece here: https://lnkd.in/eimvrar8 According to Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) 2024 survey: ✅ 97% of EdTech leaders see benefits in AI. ✅ 35% of districts already have generative AI initiatives. But the risks? New cyberattacks (63%), cyberbullying (47%), & lack of teacher #AI training (49%). Privacy is also a major concern. A Maryland high school ran a student’s paper through GPTZero to check for AI plagiarism without consent. The result: Potential #FERPA violations & student privacy infringements. Schools must tread carefully with third-party AI tools. #AI bias is real. AI mirrors societal biases found in its training data. This can widen disparities. But the *opportunities* are enormous: 🎯 Personalized learning tailored to individual learners with stronger coaching abilities. 📊 Faster, more accurate assessments and data insights. 📚 Streamlined administrative tasks like HR and grant management. The key: Ethical and intentional implementation. To support education leaders, ILO Group created TWO #AI Frameworks for districts and states - see here: https://lnkd.in/eQcF8sph These are living documents, evolving with AI advancements. These frameworks focus on 4 key areas: 1) Political: Governance, ethics, and privacy. 2) Operational: AI literacy, training, and communication. 3) Technical: Infrastructure readiness, safety, and security. 4) Fiscal: Sustainable and adequate funding. Schools need technical partnerships to navigate this AI era. AI Assurance Labs can assess safety & ethical risks. Systems must be in place to detect & respond to deepfakes or AI-generated threats. Data security & transparency are non-negotiable. Education leaders must balance competing priorities, starting with clear goals, not just tools. The time to act is now. AI is reshaping education, and leaders, educators, and technical experts must work together to ensure this generational opportunity isn’t wasted.

"Business is a game of strategy, not chance." I wrote about why every woman CEO needs a poker strategy for Forbes Business Council, and Maria Konnikova nailed it in her The Wall Street Journal piece: Poker isn’t just a game—it’s a masterclass in risk-taking, reading people, and strategic decision-making. Read here: https://lnkd.in/ejcStCuq In poker, as in leadership, you can’t wait for perfect information. Both require balancing calculated risks with instinct, knowing when to fold and when to go all-in. These are skills women must hone to lead effectively in boardrooms, classrooms, and beyond.  Which is why the work of Poker Power and Jenny Just is so essential. Bringing this essential game and its powerful skill set to more women, including Women Leading Ed, can advance real progress for these leaders and the communities they serve. As Maria Konnikova points out, poker builds confidence in risk-taking. Women often face scrutiny for bold decisions, but poker helps reclaim that space. In leadership, the ability to take risks unapologetically is transformative. In my Forbes piece, I wrote about how women leaders often feel pressure to overcompensate. Poker reminds us: Success isn’t about being the loudest—it’s about playing smart and strategically–there is power in silence. Read here: https://lnkd.in/eE4HMkct Maria Konnikova also highlights poker as a tool for sharpening emotional intelligence. Reading people—decoding motivations, body language, and what’s unsaid—is a critical leadership skill that poker helps hone. The lesson? For women leaders, poker isn’t just a game. It’s a playbook for navigating a world that’s often stacked against us. Whether you’re leading a company, school system, or team, poker teaches resilience, courage, and strategy. Let’s normalize these conversations and equip more women to step up—and win.
