What are the equilibrium effects of public spending in education? This study by Tahir Andrabi, Natalie Bau, Jishnu Das, Naureen Karachiwalla, and Asim Ijaz Khwaja found that a public school grant program randomized at the village in #Pakistan resulted in test scores that were 0.2 standard deviations higher in public schools – and in private schools in treated markets. The study found that accounting for private sector responses increases the program’s cost-effectiveness by 85% and affects how a policy maker would target spending. The global food system is uniquely vulnerable to climate impacts, making adaptation of paramount importance. While contributing roughly one-third of total anthropogenic emissions, food systems around the world fortunately also hold immense potential for mitigation through improved practices and land use. A new article published by Johan Swinnen (IFPRI), Loraine Ronchi (The World Bank Group), and Thomas Reardon (Michigan State University and IFPRI) in Science emphasizes the critical role of agrifood value chains (AVCs) in supporting both adaptation and mitigation at the farm level.
