  • Imagine planting 44,000 trees. 🌳 This is the equivalent impact of Zukunftmoor's sphagnum moss farm in Lower Saxony, with the carbon it can capture—plus they are cultivating spagnum moss that can be used as biomass to improve soil health. This is true regeneration, and it is a regenerative business that is leading the way in how regenerative agriculture can be impactful, scalable, and have a product that drives more regeneration. Generation-Re invested in this catalytic business at a time that could drive progress to this farm and support their mission to scale regenerative practices and create a healthier planet. #regenerativeagriculture #climatechange #impactinvesting #sustainablebusiness #generationre Niko Marcel Waesche Julia Kasper

We create impact by cultivating sphagnum moss! 🌱   Over the past weeks, we have set up the polders for construction phase one of our sphagnum moss farm in the North German region of Lower Saxony. This is the prerequisite for rewetting the drained peatland. Currently, we are sowing seeding material, which will cover our rewetted pilot plot over the next few years.   Our anticipated results: 📌 Climate protection: On our first pilot plot of 13.4 hectares, we are saving around 550 tons of CO2 equivalents per year. The same amount would require planting around 44,000 trees every year!   🪶 Biodiversity: We are creating a habitat for typical peatland plants and animals. Analyses have shown that we are increasing the area for migratory birds such as white storks and greylag geese. The soil also benefits from the absence of manure and mineral fertilizatizer or liming.  🚜 Regional economy: With our sphagnum moss, we provide a peat substitute for the soil industry. In this way, we create new economic prospects for the peatland region we operate in.    Climate protection also is a lot of manual work: A big reach out to all the helpers who supported us with the sowing, despite a lot of mud, rain and cold! #sphagnummoss #climateprotection #zukunftmoor #peatland #agriculture

#zukunftmoor #torfmoos #biodiversität #klimaschutz #moormussnass #startup #landwirtschaft

  • Did you know that raising animals in agroforestry systems can be a game-changer for both the environment and our food? 🌳🍗 By mimicking nature, we can create thriving ecosystems where trees, animals, and soil work together in harmony. The numbers tell a powerful story: Silvopastoral systems (combining trees, forage, and livestock) can sequester up to 5-10 times more carbon than conventional grazing systems, storing 6.1-10.4 tons of carbon per hectare per year [Project Drawdown, 2020]. Beyond carbon, agroforestry systems build soil health in remarkable ways: 🪱Increase soil organic matter by 21-50% compared to conventional systems 🪱Reduce soil erosion by up to 50% 🪱Support up to 50% more biodiversity [FAO Agroforestry Systems Report, 2021] Regenerative meat, produced in this way, offers a delicious and sustainable alternative to conventional livestock farming. One of our portfolio companies, Tree-Range® Farms is a great example of this approach. By raising chickens in a more natural domain, they're not only producing high-quality meat but also contributing to biodiversity and soil regeneration. It's time to support farmers who are leading the way towards a more sustainable food system. Reginaldo Haslett-Marroquin. • The most important day of the year…? 🌱 Generation-Re invests in soil - the regeneration of it through the agricultural and food businesses we support. Soil is the foundation, and as The First Thirty points to, the first 30 cm of soil is where the biological life and carbon are stored - this is the basis for all life on Earth. The First Thirty Naeem Lakhani and Koen van Seijen, host of Investing in Regenerative Agriculture and Food are the founding team, and they came together for a purpose to make investing into soil health accessible and impactful. It’s all about soil. So Happy World Soil Day … we might say it’s the most important day of the year 🪱🙌🏻🌻 #regenerativeagriculture #soil #soilhealth #investinsoil

  • Financial capital is one thing, but we are committed to offering more than just a connection with our investor community in Generation-Re. We aim to raise awareness to regenerative agriculture and food through the breadth of businesses we invest in, and the information we share. The value of regeneration leads us -this includes, how we can be regenerative, how we can spread awareness, and spotlight our portfolio companies and changes in the sector. We invest in regenerative agriculture and food businesses that create a better world today and tomorrow, but 'regenerative' encompasses more than just the businesses we invest in. Being regenerative is a way of being, it is about cross-pollinating knowledge between founders, investors, and within the community. We connect online and offline and come together to hear the highlights of growth, what it takes to build a regenerative business, and their investment potential. Koen van Seijen refers to being a member as a mini "MBA" for how much can be learned, but it's more than that, it's a network, and a community of investors, founders, farmers, entrepreneurs, and others who know that regenerative agriculture and food is not only a wise investment decision but the way to create the greatest impact. This is about more than just capital, financial and natural, it is about connection, community, and regenerative capital. Are you aligned with our values and want to join a network investing in regenerative agriculture and food? #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativebusiness #regeneration #foodinvesting https://www.gen-re.land/

  • Less Time, More Tech: Regenerative Grazing with a High-Tech Twist 🐮 Farming can be a demanding profession, requiring long hours and constant attention, particularly when adding the regenerative mob grazing approach which requires often daily + movement of the livestock. But what if you could achieve regenerative grazing operation with less time spent on manual tasks? GEN-RE is proud to support innovative companies like Collie and Nofence who are pioneering the use of technology to streamline rotational grazing while maintaining regenerative practices. Here's how: Collie Smart Fencing Solutions: Forget endless hours erecting and moving fences. Collie offers a sophisticated suite of electric fencing solutions, including wireless fence testers, solar-powered energizers, and innovative temporary fencing systems. These solutions save graziers valuable time while ensuring animal safety and rotational grazing efficiency. Nofence Virtual Fences for Freedom and Sustainability: Nofence empowers farmers to create virtual fences using GPS collars and a user-friendly app. Animals can roam freely within designated boundaries, eliminating the need for physical fences and minimising environmental impact. By using these technologies, farmers can implement rotational grazing with less time investment, reduced infrastructure costs, and a smaller environmental footprint. This allows for a focus on herd health, pasture management, and overall farm well-being. Embrace the future of freeing up more time to regenerative farms. #regenerativeagriculture #rotationalgrazing #agritech #collie #nofence #generationre

  • We love hearing updates like this on the power of science and data to map the regenerative impact that our portfolio company UNDO has achieved. Recent achievements: 🪨 Scientific Validation: UNDO's peer-reviewed research conducted in partnership with Newcastle University, found that basalt-based demonstrated significant benefits of enhanced rock weathering (ERW) contributed to a 9 - 20.5% higher crop yield and suggested increased crop resilience to future climate challenges on crop yields and soil health. It also showed a stabilising effect on the soil pH, with the soil pH being on average 0.2 and 0.29 pH units higher in the basalt-amended plots, compared to the control plots. The effect of silicate mineral dissolution on the soil pH could represent an attractive benefit for farmers who want to amend the pH of their soil. 🪨 Global Expansion: Expanding operations into Canada, UNDO is accelerating ERW research and deployment including spreading wollastonite, a fast-weathering mineral that will speed up the process of getting the weathering data. 🪨 Real-World Impact: Over 200,000 tonnes of silicate rock have been spread on 250 farms worldwide, improving soil health and boosting crop yields. We need data, to prove the power and importance of businesses like UNDO, that are led by impact, science and the regeneration of nature. Thank you Jim Mann for the updates - and GEN-RE will continue to spotlight your pioneering success and impact. #regenerativeagriculture #climatechange #soilhealth #agriculturetech #UNDO #GENRE

Here is why we think a revolution in smallholder farming is on its way. Because there is a vast potential to increase income if you farm regeneratively. What drives this increase in income? 1) Higher yield. Most smallholders can afford little to no chemical inputs - so massive increases in yield are possible when regenerative practices (compost, cover cropping, mulching, no till) are applied. --> See our post from last week. 2) Higher quality and therefore higher prices. Regenerative farming practices produce crops which have less diseases, are stronger, more tastier and have longer shelf life. Especially in commodity markets, higher quality leads to higher prices - when processing and marketing is done well. Price premiums for organic can sometimes also be obtained (typically around 10%). 3) Lower costs. In some cases, cost reductions can be obtained (depending on the starting situation - this applies particularly when chemicals were used in the starting situation). In the chart below, you see results from: - Zambia (red bars). We compare a smallholder in a conventional system who is growing only chillies, with a smallholder in the Simalaha IFC outgrower system who is growing chillies regeneratively, in a rotation with beans and a cover crop. We also show the income of a farmer at our incubator farm - who receives intensive support and grows a range of different crops including vegetables for the local market. More info: https://lnkd.in/ezy-dfN9 - Tanzania* (green bars). We compare black pepper yields from a typical spice grower in the region, with what a farmer can achieve when practicing regenerative organic farming. - Uganda* (yellow bars). Conventional coffee income compared to regenerative organic coffee when done well. *Note that in reality these crops are grown in diverse agroforestry systems, and therefore the yield per acre is an extrapolation to be able to compare like-for-like systems.
