We finance, connect and reimagine data to save lives
About us
The Complex Risk Analytics Fund, short CRAF’d, is new multilateral financing instrument to foster an open data ecosystem that supports all stakeholders in crisis anticipation, prevention and response. Inspired by the Secretary-General’s Data Strategy, CRAF'd is the result of a joint design process championed by Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, and the United Nations family, as well as other partners across the globe. With sustainable and scalable financing, CRAF'd will foster an ecosystem that expands shared capabilities for unlocking more power from data for insight, impact, and integrity in crisis action. Administered by the UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund Office, CRAF'd fully operational in early 2022. The fund's acronym CRAF'd (pronounce k-r-a-a-f-t) signifies the shared commitment to invest in excellence in the use of data for the common good.

#CRAFdRecap2024:"A key factor in the success of getting ahead of disasters is data—without it, we are navigating in the dark."— Juan Chaves-Gonzalez. This October, CRAF’d participated alongside over 1,800 global leaders at the 12th Global Dialogue Platform. Juan, as part of a team championing proactive humanitarian action, shared valuable perspectives on the role of data in disaster response, setting the stage for impactful dialogues. Together with our ecosystem partners like United Nations OCHA, we explored how data and anticipatory action can reshape humanitarian efforts. From leveraging early warning systems to acting before disaster strikes, the conversation focused on one crucial truth: Better DATA saves lives! See how we’re shaping the future of anticipatory action through our data financing projects. Details in the comments ⬇️

#CRAFd2024Recap: With crises becoming more complex—driven by displacement, climate change, or migration risks—actionable data is the key to saving lives. That’s why CRAF’d and partners recognized the urgent need for datasets that not only inform decisions but also empower communities to anticipate, prepare for, and recover from disasters. In April, CRAF’d invested $3.5 million—a deliberate step toward building a resilient future. Here’s where that investment is making an impact: ▪️ Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC): Creating a global dataset to address the needs of over 70 million internally displaced individuals. ▪️ IOM - UN Migration: Mapping migration risks for 40 million people to enable targeted interventions. ▪️ ICPAC : Delivering localized climate hazard models to help East African communities act before disasters strike. ▪️ Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre : Developing composite risk indices to support anticipatory humanitarian action in Africa and the Middle East. ▪️ UNDP: Launching a real-time risk data platform to guide decisions across 15,000 indicators. Over 140 organizations actively use CRAF’d-supported data and insights to drive better crisis action and more effective responses. Learn more in the comments.

#CRAFd2024Recap:Conflict prevention starts with foresight! This year, the VIEWS Prediction Challenge brought researchers together to redefine how we forecast and respond to global crises, making every prediction count. Supported by CRAF'd, VIEWS a collaboration between PRIO and Uppsala University has gone beyond traditional forecasting methods. By incorporating uncertainty estimates, the challenge bridges the gap between predictive science and real-world decision-making. These insights empower policymakers to prepare not just for likely outcomes but also for high-risk scenarios that demand urgent attention. The results are now live on the VIEWS Prediction Challenge Dashboard, offering interactive forecasts that are shaping responses to crises worldwide.
