🚨 OUT NOW: 2024 Global Report on Internal Displacement 75.9 million people, the most ever recorded, were living in #internaldisplacement at the end of 2023. New escalations in conflict, such as in #Sudan and #Gaza, forced millions of people to flee their homes in 2023. Millions were already living in displacement, mainly from ongoing or previous conflicts. Disasters, like earthquakes, storms, floods and wildfires, also destroyed people’s homes and led to the displacement of millions more. In 2023, 82% of conflict displacement occurred in countries with high climate vulnerability, yet fragile states receive just $2 per person annually for adaptation, compared to $161 in non-fragile states. Read Alice Baillat's policy analysis from COP29 to learn more about the urgency of addressing the nexus between climate change, conflict and displacement and some steps in that direction from Baku. https://lnkd.in/eHua7Hmf

A home is more than housing for internally displaced people. This excellent summary of the discussion at the recent #WorldUrbanForum highlights aspects of "home" that go beyond a roof over one's head, including thoughts from our Alesia O'Connor and a diverse panel of top experts with excellent insights from work in Cameroon, Colombia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Nigeria and Ukraine.
‘It all starts at home.’ This was the tagline of 2024's World Urban Forum (WUF) – but what does ‘home’ mean for people who are displaced into towns and cities? In HPG's panel at the WUF, which included Caitlin Sturridge, Paula Gaviria Betancur, Modjenpa Bibiche, Alesia O'Connor, Valeriia Vershynina, Ana María Diez and Mehreteab Ghebregergs, we sought to nuance and deepen the framing of home beyond a narrow focus on housing. Drawing on experiences from Cameroon, Colombia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Nigeria and Ukraine, here is what we had to say → https://lnkd.in/eBjNMBcQ #WorldUrbanForm #InternationalMigrantsDay #MigrantsDay #IDPs

Over 11 million people in #Sudan have been forced to flee their homes, with millions living with host communities. Both internally displaced and host communities are grappling with severe shortages of food, shelter, and healthcare. 🌊 Disasters displace millions of people ever year. Displacement doesn't just disrupt lives and livelihoods, it reverses the socio-economic development of communities and countries. But #DisasterDisplacement is not inevitable. From prevention to solutions, development and climate finance are key in supporting governments in addressing displacement. Our Christelle Cazabat and Nacanieli S. joined a conversation hosted by the Center for Global Development highlighting how existing sources of development and climate adaptation finance can drive government-led solutions to internal displacement.
