Do you report on difficult topics, in challenging places? Calling all those Editors out there who would like some basic guidance on sending their people out on the ground to cover unpredictable stories. ACOS Alliance and WAN-IFRA have designed a FREE course just for you! https://lnkd.in/ezTeHwiQ All you need is a few hours, wifi and a device to read on. The Fundamentals of Safe Commissioning provides news editors and managers with the skills they need to safely commission journalistic work and support the safety of the freelancers they work with.  Launched this year on the Editor Safety Hub, the course is already helping newsrooms improve their safety practices: "As an editor I now appreciate safety in the newsroom after this training. All the reporters I work with will now have a clear understanding of why safety matters (and) I have started developing a risk assessment tool for my newsroom"  - News Editor, Kenya "The course guided me on how to assess risks associated with assignments and how to develop mitigation strategies. It enabled me to discover ways to create a supportive and safe work environment and how to provide resources for journalists dealing with harm or trauma" - Assignment Editor, Pakistan "I have learned a lot of new information from the course, and we will [now] try to prepare new safety protocols for our newsroom" - Editor, Azerbaijan Really proud to have been a small part of the course's development, and in awe of the team that pulled it all together. 🚨 Attention freelance journalists 🚨 Applications are now open for the 2024 Reporting Safely in Crisis Zones course! In partnership with the ACOS Alliance and the Bronx Documentary Center, the Dart Center is offering its annual four-day crisis zones reporting course for 16 freelance journalists at no cost. The course will be held October 3-6, 2024 at the Bronx Documentary Center in New York City. This course will teach you how to operate with caution in volatile situations, with an emphasis on conflicts and civil unrest. The training is also relevant to working in natural disaster situations such as earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis. While most hostile environment training for journalists deals with ducking crossfire and kidnappers, this course will teach you how to avoid unnecessary peril through preparation and planning before, during and after assignments. Participants will emerge from the course with a better understanding of how to work with local producers, shun attackers and protect their digital footprints. The course is open to freelance journalists working in print, photography, video, and/or audio with at least two years of professional experience. Applications are open through July 31st, 2024 at 5pm EST.
