Here's how you can craft a clear and compelling business vision as an entrepreneur.

Leaders must create a shared vision that shapes the way employees feel about their organization. They must accept responsibility for making “the company,” “our company” –– a place where people work together instead of “doing their own thing.” It is critical to present a clear and concise view of the organization that is compelling, realistic, and attractive. Furthermore, it must promise a better future than prevailing conditions. It is important, however, that this vision is not so removed from the reality of the organization, or so difficult to achieve, that no one takes it seriously. The shared vision, statement of purpose, and operating values must be integrated so that they mesh with the day-to-day activities of the organization.

I'd add that vision also requires some dreaming - letting our minds expand beyond current constraints. My favorite Jane Goodall quote embodies this: "What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make." I rewatched Simon Sinek's Ted Talk he gave in 2009 about starting with Why. It's especially important as an entrepreneur to know and deeply connect with reason why you are doing what you are doing - your cause, your purpose, your belief in why what you are doing is important and why you are offering what you do to the market. Why comes from the inside - it's about what you believe and the impact you want to make with what you are offering. The result of you offering this is the impact and the money you make - don't start with wanting to make money because that doesn't inspire people to buy what you are offering.

As your vision statement and mission statement are two of the first formal things you will create as you establish your startup, they can be enormously powerful ways to chart your course—consolidating everything you want to achieve while giving your entire organization direction and purpose. The best vision and mission statements will help to focus your business, and provide your customers a next-level experience by articulating the promise you are committed to fulfilling as a company.

If you truly want to achieve “liftoff,” you have to get off the couch, make a commitment, and give it all you’ve got. The fact is, success won’t be served to you on a silver platter. Dreams, unlike eggs, don’t hatch by sitting on them.

You're onto something big here! Yes, defining purpose is critical - that soul-searching "why" that fuels our passion. But you've also got to let that vision expand and catch fire.

If you’re not willing to make the commitment, don’t complain about the outcome. Remember…you’re going to have good days and bad. But every step you take in the right direction will bring you closer to your goal. You’re going to face adversity, and your resolve will be tested. But you’re going to get through the tough days by remembering why you began your journey. At the end of the day your choice is clear: Are you ready to make the required commitment or would you rather forfeit your dreams? So, tell me, if commitment is the fuel for your dreams — are you running on full or empty?

A vision statement should not be unrealistic or impossible. It should be grounded in your capabilities and competencies. It should also be measurable and verifiable. You should be able to track your progress and evaluate your performance against your vision. For example, Google's vision statement is "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful". This statement is ambitious but attainable, given Google's expertise and resources in information technology.

When we have the courage to show up authentically and invite different voices to the table, that's when the real magic happens. Our visions become richer, more nuanced, and aligned with the needs of those we aim to serve.

Creating the vision, however, is not enough. It must be brought to life and then imbued in the corporate culture. The vision must be so omnipresent that employees old and new incorporate it into their personal and corporate belief structure, and then communicate it to customers and suppliers and the world at large. Moreover, it must be articulated clearly and frequently throughout the organization, so that it becomes ingrained in the organization’s culture. Then the corporate structure and management style must be shaped to lend credence to the image created by the vision.

A vision is not something that you keep to yourself, but something that you share with your team, partners, investors, and customers. By communicating your vision effectively, you can attract and retain the right people who share your passion and commitment, and who can help you to realize your vision. A vision also helps you to create a positive and engaging culture, where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute to the success of the business.

A vision statement should be easy to understand and communicate. It should not be vague, abstract, or jargon-filled. It should also be distinctive and memorable. It should capture the essence of your business and what makes it unique. For example, Amazon's vision statement is "to be Earth's most customer-centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online". This statement clearly defines what Amazon does, who it serves, and how it differs from other online retailers.

A vision statement is not a one-time exercise. It is a dynamic and evolving document that should be reviewed and revised periodically. You should update your vision statement as your business grows, changes, or faces new challenges. You should also solicit feedback from your team, customers, and other stakeholders to ensure that your vision statement is still relevant, accurate, and inspiring. Creating Vision is complex, many go wrong and hence customers are unable to resonate with brand. Here are some tips: 1. Make clear Vision, Mission and values for the brand or organization along with goals broken into quarterly plans 2. Vision - big picture idea of what you want to achieve (think big) 3. Mission - general statement of how you will achieve your vision what value you will create 4. Core Values - how you will behave during the process 5. Goals - general statements of milestones you need to meet to achieve your vision 6. Objectives - specific, time-sensitive statements for achieving your goals 7. Make sure that as you define your vision, it is easy to communicate, easy to understand and something others can clearly identify with. Before you make it public, test it with people you know and trust… when you launch your business and scale up to employing people, make sure that the way your staff feel matches how you want your external interactions to feel.
