The air fryer might be the appliance of the century. The appliance has been explosively popular for its ability to get quick-and-easy crispy dishes on the table, from frozen French fries to homemade chicken Parmesan. The appliance's popularity has spawned countless cookbooks, not to mention specialized add-ons and accessories that make using your air fryer even easier.

For the cleaning-averse and scrub-o-phobic, try silicone or paper liners to avoid cleaning your air fryer each time. For the sensitive-handed or those with children, tongs or plate grippers take the danger out of air frying. And if you turn to your air fryer frequently, you’ll want to invest in products like crisper trays, loaf pans, or even a grill pan that lets it do even more than before. Ready to get air frying? We selected 10 favorite accessories below you might want to check out.

We love these paper liners because they make air fryer cleanup pretty much non-existent. Just lift the used liner out and toss it in the trash when done — a quick wipe-down of the basket is the maximum you’ll need after that. Rex Freiberger, CEO of Gadget Review, always recommends paper or parchment liners. Air fryer liners are a great accessory to have,” he says. “Like parchment paper on baking sheets, air fryer liners are designed to significantly minimize — or completely eliminate — the need for cleaning up after making your food.”

A thin coating on the paper makes it greaseproof, so it won't soak through even if you’re cooking something oily. They are made of potentially flammable paper, however, so there are some temperature restrictions. Never preheat your air fryer with a liner inside, and make sure there's enough food in the liner to weigh it down and cover much of the surface area. The link above goes to the 7.9-inch round version, but these liners come in seven round, square, and rectangular sizes that should fit almost any air fryer model.

One of the best things about air fryers is that they get hot, which is great for ultra-crunchy food but makes it a pain to lift the scorching basket or grate out of the fryer. These plate grippers have a rubber surface can clamp onto anything securely, whether it's a thick, heavy plate or the small ledge of an air fryer basket. We love that they can be used at almost any angle to grab hot items from the oven, microwave, Instant Pot, air fryer, or any other appliance.

The air fryer is shockingly versatile, and this set proves it. It's ideal for a new air fryer user who wants to dip their toe into all the appliance has to offer. You get a cake pan, cupcake pan, pizza pan, waffle mold, four metal racks, silicone mitts, tongs, silicone brush, disposable liners, and a recipe guide. The silicone is a bit thinner than we would like, but the price is a bargain considering everything that's included.

The ribbed and textured base of these silicone inserts is unique. It raises the food ever so slightly, to let air circulate underneath and actually crisp the entire surface, something that can be a problem with other kinds of liners. They're heat-safe all the way up to 450°F, which should cover the full range any air fryer can achieve. The grooves do tend to catch crumbs and can be tough to hand-wash, but you can throw the entire liner right in the dishwasher.

Sure, air fryers are great for quickly cooking up a few chicken nuggets for lunch, but they can do so much more. We love this cookbook because it not only has many main dishes but also veggie sides, snacks, and desserts. The beginning of the book serves as a reference guide with helpful info and tips on how to use your air fryer and easy shortcuts to level up pre-made items like frozen fries. Unfortunately, it's not illustrated, but there are 600 recipes that cover just about everything.

The combo of a mandoline and an air fryer means that dinner can be on the table in half the time. A mandoline streamlines cutting and chopping, making prep take a fraction of the time. This mandoline is perfect for slicing uniform veggies that cook quickly and consistently in your air fryer, and it topped our list of favorite mandolines in testing.

We love the Mueller model for its ease of use and double-functionality as a handheld or countertop model. During our tests, it easily produced consistent, thin slices, although it struggled a bit when we made slices too thick. It also comes with interchangeable blades that give you a range of options as to the types of cuts you can make. So whether you want to make homemade potato chips or sweet potato fries in your air fryer, this is the perfect accessory to do it.

When you think of perfectly moist, warm banana nut muffins or delicious breakfast egg cups, you might not immediately think of the air fryer. But with OXO's silicone baking cups, the options are endless. We love this set for its sturdy structure, which allows the cups to stand on their own without needing support from a metal pan. That makes them perfect for use in the air fryer. Plus, they have convenient easy-lift tabs that will make removing them while they're hot much easier.

It is worth noting that they are smaller than standard paper baking cups, so they may not fit perfectly in a muffin pan if you use them for regular baking as well. That said, the silicone material is incredibly durable, reusable, and more sustainable; and we love the high heat resistance, so they can be easily tossed in the dishwasher.

A good pair of tongs is perhaps the most essential tool in any cook's arsenal, and Misen's model is our top-tested set of tongs. Air frying can be greasy, so tongs with an all-metal body can get slippery; the silicone grip strips on these make them easy to maneuver, even if your hands are oily, and the heatproof silicone tips won't scratch nonstick or metal surfaces. For most air fryers, the shorter 9.5-inch pair is best to precisely grab items out of the basket, though it couldn't hurt to pick up the combo with a second 12-inch set to take care of all your food-moving needs.

The hardest part of air frying is knowing just how long you should set the cooking time. Most any recipe can be adapted to use an air fryer, but if you're used to more traditional oven or stovetop cooking, it can take a lot of trial and error. This handy cheat sheet takes most of the guesswork out of things, giving you recommended times and temperatures for an array of meats, vegetables, frozen foods, and more. The most convenient part? It's magnetic, so you can stick it on your fridge for easy reference whenever you need it.

Air frying creates all the golden brown crispness and rich taste of deep-fried foods with far less grease. Part of the key to great results is getting just a little oil distributed evenly over the ingredients, and this sprayer bottle is the perfect tool to do just that. It puts out an even mist at the push of a button that's easy to control and direct, comes with a funnel for easy filling, and has convenient measurement markings on the front. Just make sure that you don't drop it; the glass container is liable to shatter.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you really need the accessories for air fryers?

You don’t need accessories for your air fryer, but we highly recommend a few. You can use your air fryer out of the box without any extras, but some accessories really come in handy for specific recipes or techniques, or to make cleanup easier. When shopping for air fryer accessories, remember the size and shape of your appliance and what you’ll usually use it for. Kara Myers of Sweetly Splendid loves her air fryer accessories and says, "There are two key things I find important with looking at air fryer accessories. First, it doesn't inhibit the airflow function (the entire purpose of the air fryer), and second, it doesn't damage the lining. Air fryers are often coated in a nonstick-style surface, and using accessories that will scrape against that surface like metal tongs can cause chips and damage to the lining and shorten the life of your air fryer."

  • How does an air fryer work?

If you’re familiar with the convection oven, you already know with how an air fryer works. Both machines use a powerful fan to circulate hot air and make food cook more evenly and more quickly. The major difference is that an air fryer is typically smaller than a convection oven, with an extra-powerful fan. It's even more effective at distributing heat all around the food to create even browning and crispness. Air fryers also have a perforated basket or tray that the food sits on, in order to let air flow underneath and cook top, bottom, and sides equally.

  • Can you put foil in an air fryer?

It’s safe to put aluminum foil in an air fryer, but we don’t recommend it. It blocks airflow, which causes uneven heating and kind of defeats the purpose of air frying. The metal material can also stratch the nonstick interior of your air fryer, or even flake off and work its way into the heating element or fan. If you want to use a liner to make cleanup easier, we'd suggest a custom-sized paper or silicone option, which is more gentle on the basket and likely to have holes and air channels that help ensure even cooking.

  • How do you clean an air fryer?

Some air fryer baskets or plates are dishwasher safe, so always check the manufacturer's instructions to see if yours is. If not, manual cleanup is a breeze. Always start with your air fryer off, unplugged, and cooled down. Next, remove the basket or grate and knock any large food pieces into the trash. Wash the basket or grate along with the drawer with warm soapy water and the soft side of a sponge. For more stubborn messes, try soaking the drawer or grate with warm, soapy water for about 10 minutes and proceed with the soft side of a sponge. Always make sure to thoroughly dry every component before putting your air fryer back together.
