By Terry Nettle

About this ebook
The invasion of Ukraine by Russia in early 2022 was an especially destructive war. It has since morphed into an even more devastating and prolonged NATO's proxy war against Russia. Why has NATO chosen to escalate this war into a proxy war against Russia. Why has this war become so intractable?
There are many causes to the 2022 invasion of Ukraine by Russia. But there is no question that both sides have contributed to the causes of that terrible war through their many missteps and misdeeds. There is also no question that NATO played not a small part in all the fateful calculations of the antagonists that led to the war.
What are the tragic circumstances surrounding this terrible war?
Are the fight for ever more freedom and the fight for ever more national security the ultimate cause that is so irresistible, that it is worth fighting to the end for? And for so many people to die for?
Are the superpowers so set on protecting their dominance that they have to constantly fight among themselves to prove their ideological, economic and political superiority? Do they not realize that the best way to protect our common future is to cooperate and pool their resources for the benefit of all humankind?
It is time that they stop all this foolish game of fighting like children.

NATO's Proxy War Against Russia - Terry Nettle
Chapter 1. Devastating Ukraine War
Ukraine has become a critical front line state between the two superpowers USA and Russia largely because of the relentless eastward expansion of NATO.
Ironically, NATO was formed in 1949 as a military alliance specifically to counter the serious threat of the mighty Soviet Union after WW2. So when Soviet Union imploded in 1991, one would have thought that NATO has served its purpose and was no longer needed or relevant. But, on the contrary, it has not outlived its usefulness to the USA and EU. It was even purposefully continued as a tool against Russia.
NATO carried on this mission by capturing most of the recently independent former Soviet Republics into its orbit. When the speed of this process picked up during the so-called colour revolutions in those new countries, NATO started to be perceived by Russia as an alarmingly threatening tool of the West to encircle Russia.
It was clearing a serious strategic mistake that NATO, instead of enticing Russia to join its ranks to counter the seemingly unstoppable rise of China, has chosen to further alienate and weaken Russia, and to cut it off from its traditional geopolitical sphere of influence.
So, it was not surprising that soon after the sudden collapse of the pro-Russian regime in Ukraine in 2014, Russia sent in its troops to protect the Russian-speaking region of Crimea and its naval base there, and to subsequently annex Crimea.
When in 2021, Belarus narrowly survived a copycat colour revolution, Russia was further alarmed.
One might say that Russia was pushed into a corner and had to respond to an existential threat from the aggressively expanding NATO into its eastern flank.
Chapter 2. Pope's Independent Perspective Of The War
It is amazing to note that Pope Francis has a very independent and clear-eyed assessment of this war.
In an interview published on 14Jun2022, the pontiff condemned the ferocity and cruelty of the Russian troops
while warning against what he said was a fairy tale perception of the conflict as good versus evil.
We need to move away from the usual Little Red Riding Hood pattern, in that Little Red Riding Hood was good and the wolf was the bad one,
he said. Something global is emerging and the elements are very much entwined.
Pope Francis added that a couple of months before the war he met a head of state, who he did not identify but described as "a wise man who speaks little, a very wise man indeed ... He told me that he was very worried about how NATO was moving. I asked him why, and he replied: ‘They are
