Out of respect for the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the chief of police in a nearby town is banning gun shows until further notice.

Westchester Collectors Inc. had planned to host a gun and knife show in Waterbury, Conn., on Jan. 12 and 13 until police chief Michael Gugliotti pulled the plug, Talking Points Memo reported Friday.

“I was just sitting home, really just thinking about what I need to do as a police chief during this type of crisis to ensure that our citizens are feeling safe and comfortable,” Gugliotti told TPM. “Out of respect and honor for those 26 folks that lost their life in Newtown, I made the decision then and there to send the promoter a message that I would not be signing any permit for any gun show until further notice.”

Waterbury's gun show wasn't the only one to get the axe following last month's massacre.

A number of firearm shows, including one in West Plains, have been canceled, the Connecticut Post reported Thursday.

However, one show in Stamford, Conn., the town where gunman Adam Lanza's father lives, is still scheduled for this weekend, according to The Atlantic Wire.
