The hype cycle around Generative AI has been needling at me for some time, and I think Benedict Evans hit the nail on the head why: at the moment, it feels like SQL, not AGI. ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney, etc. are fantastic tool structures for asking good questions (like SQL is), you just still have to know your use case, and you still have to ask the good question. SQL's a great tool for a financial analyst, but it won't inherently turn you into a solid investor. My career got built off SQL, as did many others, and Oracle has made a tremendous business with that technology as its backbone. Perhaps in the future we'll see lots of LLMs as a common tool in the research stack, in much the same role SQL plays now. https://lnkd.in/gKXbdbDh

The policies being driven forward by Thierry Breton around the EU AI Act have been utmost damaging for the European tech industry, and they need to be revised as soon as possible. We need to better balance driving European innovation through data collection and modeling with conflicting needs such as data protection and safety. We need to ensure we can turn these developments into businesses that can be the pillar of the next generation of companies that provide productivity growth in Europe. We have no other choice - either we do this here, or we will have to take over products developed in the US and in China, as it already happened with search engines, cell phones, and social networks. Thrilled to share that I have completed Oxford Saïd's AI Programme! With a final grade of 97%, I couldn't be happier with the result. It was personal interest, professional development, curiosity and fear which drove me to the programme. I have to say, I really loved it. After six intensive modules, I am enormously more prepared for a future with AI. Through the course of the programme, we learned the long and tumultuous history of AI, key concepts, challenges and applications, algorithms, and (crucially) considered legal and ethical concerns. All of which we drew upon to define strategies and business cases for the responsible use of this technology. Not only was the programme incredibly insightful, engagement with your peers was a strong element throughout, which fostered interesting debates, and hopefully lasting connections. Ultimately, AI exhibits enormous potential, great power and grave danger. Play around with ChatGPT for a few minutes, and it's easy to see why AI has the potential to bring about a fourth industrial revolution. However, for the recent surge in hype and enthusiasm around the technology, we have also seen that the technology is far from perfect. We have seen Generative Pre-trained Transformers hallucinate, fabricating facts and imagining events that never happened, and we have seen image classifiers mislabel minorities as gorillas. However, strides are being made every day; Amara's Law tells us that technology is often overestimated in the short-run, and underestimated in the long-run - it's astonishing to think that last year's most complex Neural Network surpassed the number of estimated neurons in our brain by a hundredfold. Watch this space. To those who joined me on the programme, I'd like to thank you for your support and contributions. I, somewhat guardedly, look forward to moving forward with this immense technology, armed with the knowledge to put it to good, safe, use.

Interesting book, I was recommended by my very smart friend: Dopamine Nation (PL: Niewolnicy Dopaminy), which gives an interesting overview in how the dopamine system works, how we get addicted (how easy and even unnoted it can be), how sneaky drugs can affect our life and how they can derail us from enjoying it. The book has a lot of straightforward examples showing how addiction works to anything, even reading love stories (so you can check out your habits;). On the other hands author tries to be objective and says that e.g. one can take drugs in a controlled way (but beware, it can be still dangerous) or how we can help ourselves using non-medical proved way like praying. What I missed was a more deep dive into how the dopamine system works and more detailed explanation of biological mechanisms. I asked #chatGPT to analyse my time tracking data for the first 4 months of 2024 (quadrimester) and write a page as if summarizing an earnings report: <chatGPT> *Workload Increase* There has been a significant surge in professional engagement, with work hours increasing by 50.3% from 549.06 hours in 2023 to 825.54 hours in 2024. This increase indicates a robust uptake in professional activities, potentially reflecting expanded responsibilities or new projects. *Health and Fitness* A concerning decline in health and fitness activities was noted, with a 70% reduction in time allocated to these crucial activities. The decrease from 64 hours in 2023 to 19 hours in 2024 signals a need for immediate realignment of priorities to safeguard physical well-being. *Self-Learning and Development* Time invested in self-learning through books and other media saw a dramatic drop of 75%, decreasing from 69 hours in 2023 to 17 hours in 2024. This reduction could hinder ongoing personal development and professional competitiveness. *Sleep and Rest* Sleep-life balance saw a modest decrease of 5.1%, with total hours reducing from 903.63 to 857.69. The idea that we might be living in a simulation, as Roman Yampolskiy suggests, shows how AI is pushing us to question the nature of how AI is influencing what we think of as intelligence. I recently experimented with Google’s Notebook LM (powered by Gemini 1.5 Pro) to convert my articles into an audio format, and I was amazed at how it naturally turned into a brainstorming session, almost as if I was discussing ideas with friends. Initially, the article reflected my own viewpoint, but with the AI’s input, I discovered new keywords and perspectives that prompted me to think more deeply and consider angles I hadn’t previously explored. This experience has been incredibly enriching, adding depth to my writing process and sparking fresh ideas for the next article in my series.
