How important is domain/industry knowledge within QA? Lots of companies see it as a big bonus when they’re hiring, with some even having it as mandatory - but do they really need it? Or are they just assuming it’ll bring them more value + less time spent on mentoring and getting someone up to scratch in those specific areas. There’s certain industries that I can see the argument for, whether that’s a specific financial platform, or companies that have to adhere to specific regulations (as an example) - but does the new ideas and skills that someone can bring in from a completely different industry, potentially outweigh that? Also, are these skills that difficult that no one pick them up - everyone has to start somewhere, right? Like anything, there’s pros/cons and this is just a generic overview - but being narrow minded and not considering an ‘outsiders view’ maybe isn’t always the best option.

Tips for founders hiring... if your Head of Engineering or CTO needs to code every day, you're looking for a Lead Engineer or Technical Lead. By labelling vacancies incorrectly you're making it harder to recruit the right people. Lots of lead engineers & technical leads will be put off from applying for a Head of Engineering or CTO role and lots of Heads of Engineering & CTOs will apply, then pull out of the process after finding they need to code every day. It's already difficult to fill these roles, don't make it harder. What topics could we discuss next? do you know of anyone who would make a great guest? We're now over 20 episodes of the byProduct Live podcast and had some great conversations, unboxing all things SaaS and product. When launching the podcast it was deliberately short-format so it's easy to consume, giving listeners the opportunity to take on board information easily but also conveniently. It'sso difficult to consume a 2 hour podcast and then remember more than 10-20% of the discussion. I also wanted to talk to people who might not be 'Famous' or work for 'Big Companies' but who have very real stories to share that you can relate to. I also don't know any famous people Stories their peers could take value from, and realise that what they might be doing happens to everyone and that whatever you're trying to do or problem to solve, someone has probably already been through it. We've covered some great topics in SaaS and product and it's something I've found super rewarding but also educational for me as a Recruiter. In our latest episode of byProduct Live I talked to George Fairhall from award winning start-up WAC. George has been on a 4 year journey as a non-technical founder to build the app from scratch, and has faced many challenges along the way. She was super open and super informative about what she now knows and there's some great information in here for anyone on the journey, or considering starting an app/tech business. WAC gives more control to hourly paid workers, and combats issues such as underpayment which is a big problem in hourly paid jobs which are often undertaken by younger people. The fee structure most agencies use with clients is pretty standard industry-wide (X% of the candidate's salary for perm roles). Some agencies use alternative fee structures since it works better for both parties and creates more alignment - e.g. ongoing monthly retainers, embedded recruiters/RPO, flat rates, etc. Some markets have unique factors that make a non-standard fee structure more mutually beneficial for both the agency/client. Pricing structure and strategy is something that most agencies don't really dig into since it's easier to go with the status quo since it's what clients expect and are used to. I'm curious - if you've used alternative fee structures, how do you like it? Has it worked out better for everyone long term?

You know what's really cool to do as an employer... ... Pay people what they're worth (irrelevant of market conditions) 💡 I'm seeing a worrying trend at the moment - Companies looking for Software Developers with 6+ years experience, but not willing to pay more than £35k 😕 Look... I understand budget restraints... And as the owner of a start-up, I get that companies pockets are only so deep! But if your pockets are only deep enough to get someone with 2-3 years' experience... Stop looking for people with 6 years+ in the hopes that they'll bite your hand off because the hiring landscape isn't all that great at the moment! If you play the game like this, yeah, you MIGHT get a quick win now, but in 12 months time, when the market shifts (as it always does) your competitors will be queuing up to pay them what they're actually worth... And you'll be left back at square one!!

Talking with loads of #ios and #android engineers and leaders since my return from holiday last week. It seems there's still lots of questions around how long will it take the market to pick up! I'm getting asked 'Is it just the iOS market that's slow?' Err no, certainly not. 'Will the Android market pick up this year?' I don't have a crystal ball, but I do have optimism. If only this was a pier full of Software Developers in San Francisco lining up to speak to me about working in early stage startups..... 🤗 This is one of my favourite spots from my trip to San Francisco last September (if you hold your nose slightly and no, I am not saying that software developers look or smell like sealions!). I can see why there are so many startups launching in the city, it certainly feels like a hub of software activity. If this was written on my CV explaining what I do at Talenza... - Recruit mobile & software engineers - Speak with new & existing companies ...Do you think someone that doesn't know me, would jump at the chance of setting up an interview? Highly unlikely. Over the past week, I've seen more 1 page CV's with little to no context, than I have done in the past 2+ years of recruiting in the Software space. And this is a period of time as an engineer - you probably need to be doing a little bit more to stand out from the crowd. We are NOT in a market where every company is scrambling to hire and interviewing everyone that comes their way. I'm not saying put together a 20 page power point presentation as your CV, still be concise, but actually give some context on what you've been doing. If you've worked on a complex project, explain it in a few bullet points. For example; - What the the problem was - How it was solved - The impact it had on the business I'm not a CV guru and there is no magic formula (otherwise every CV would look exactly the same). But adding the above info along with the tech stack being used, will probably help you increase the CV sent to interview ratio. *Completely disregard this post if you have a 1 page CV and are getting all of the interviews you want to*

Lots and lots of movement to be discussed, so if you're hiring or thinking about hiring, you'll want to have a read or risk being completely left behind.
