Our free "Leading Others" programme closes today. This was an experiment for us to see: 1. What type of appetite there is to consume audio content in a more guided setting, combined with reflective activities and scenarios. 2. Whether the formula we had cooked up was impactful/useful to our target audience. 3. Whether time-limited free content could work as a way to introduce new people to Assemble You. In all three areas, it's been incredibly useful. We've learned: 1. Yes, a more guided setting is very helpful to certain groups. 2. The formula was good but actually needed a few tweaks (thanks to everyone who provided feedback!) 3. We've had over 200 people register, mostly from organic LinkedIn activity and a couple of email promotions. We're going to make more of these available to our existing clients and partners. We're noticing a trend at The MTPT Project at the moment: Our work for our grassroots community of parent-teachers - coaching programmes, return to work workshops, INSET sessions, online and in-person networking opportunities - has never been more popular. Parent-teachers in our schools are crying out for concrete strategies and a supportive community to help them balance the different aspects of their whole selves. But our work with leaders? Well, that's quieter. Leaders are too busy. They have other priorities. The "motherhood penalty" isn't their problem, and the connection between one of their most pressing issues - recruitment and retention - is less clear. This is problematic. We can empower teachers through coaching. We can connect them with inspirational role models. We can tell them their rights and be there to support them when things get tough. But if the schools they return to after maternity, adoption or shared parental leave don't think that creating "life friendly" working conditions is a pressing and urgent priority, we are essentially taking these colleagues to the cliff edge, ready to soar, but delivering them to an inhospitable abyss where stagnation, burnout and attrition result. Unfortunately, the retention of our experienced mid-career teachers - 67% of whom are mothers - is a complex issue to tackle. How self-aware are you? 7 steps to improve. As we develop our leadership skills, self-awareness increases in importance. Why? Leading a team requires skills different from those needed as an individual design contributor. We need to communicate, mentor, nurture, inspire, and generally model behaviours that enable our team to work together and produce the expected result. That is at its core what teamwork is meant to do. This matrix shows at a high level how internal and external self-awareness help us lead and live in alignment with our beliefs, strengths, and values. According to the researchers in this study conducted with 5,000 participants, there are 2 types of self awareness: internal—how well we understand our passions, values, impact on others, and place in the world; external—how other people view us around the same factors. Whilst this work is never done, there are a few activities we can engage in regularly: ▶️ Ask those close to you (friends and co-workers) for feedback and for their own experience ▶️ Be observant about how people react to you (both visual and verbal cues—reflect) ▶️ Learn to listen by asking follow-up questions—this will help you see your value and your ability to anticipate people's needs ▶️ Be curious about your behaviours and responses (question and evaluate them through writing or conversations with trusted friends) ▶️ Know your strengths and weaknesses (take some of the standard tests—Myers Briggs or Strengths Finder) ▶️ Be clear on your purpose and life goals (journaling/writing regularly can help) ▶️ Understand and control your emotions (meditation or exercise can help) What are key elements in your leadership development?
