The Easter holidays are over, the kids are back at school and I’d love to share my new business venture with you! I’m excited to say that I recently qualified as a Mindset, Personal Development and Performance Coach with the ICF accredited Animas Centre for Coaching. I also have a level II qualification in Understanding Autism. I will be running this business part-time alongside my company Green Fairy Productions. As both a performer and business owner, I understand only too well the pressures of the music and entertainment industries. When you’re battling self-doubt from setbacks or criticisms, compounded by funding cuts, huge competition, and the uncertainties of self-employment, it can be overwhelming. I am speaking from personal experience, so you are not alone in feeling frustrated and fearful. It doesn't have to be this way! My love of coaching began over 10 years ago when I had some coaching sessions myself. They helped me move forwards in my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined, and I developed a positive mindset that is now deep-rooted within me. I feel really privileged, and passionate about helping other people to experience this for themselves. Although I specialise in the music and entertainment industries, many of my clients come from sectors including events, education, banking and HR. Clients have come to me because of: - A lack of confidence and self-belief that is holding them back. - They feel ‘stuck’ and have no idea how to move forwards. - They have too many thoughts going round their head and have no idea what to do with them all. - They are going through some major life changes. - They want to get a healthy work-life balance - They struggle with organisation. - They feel lost amidst the challenges of being a working Mum. - They want to feel more than good enough. This is interesting. I always struggle with the idea that extrinsic motivators are what moves the needle around people not acting on their biases and stereotypes. I also struggle with the idea that our focus shouldn’t be on changing people’s attitudes about a group. I don’t believe that any of it sustains the behavior we want to see. During the Obama administration, we can argue that progressive and liberal ideals were pretty prominent. It was taboo to speak ill of historically excluded groups and we also saw organizations and people take action to invest in DEI more. Sure, there were tons of extrinsic motivators that I believe caused this shift in behavior. However, the minute the tide shifted and Trump came into office, we saw a dramatic shift in the other direction. Those same extrinsic motivators were gone or weren’t as appealing anymore. The accountability we saw is gone. People are being praised for their “honesty” and “bravery” to say horrible things about and commit heinous acts against historically excluded groups. The same people, organizations, and leaders we once saw “doing the work” did what feels like a complete 180. They were either faking it out of fear of the consequences or they fear the backlash for supporting DEI more. Either way, the impact of those extrinsic motivators didn’t stick. While I believe extrinsic motivators can shift behavior, we have to contend with what happens when those motivators are gone or are no longer sufficient enough. How do we sustain behavior change even when we have a Trump making it safe/popular to be a bigot again? I personally believe that we HAVE to change people’s attitudes and values. We have to focus on more intrinsic motivators. In the words of one of my favorite cohort mates from my doctoral program, it could also be a “both, and” situation. One of the problems with the way we do this work is that we always take a single pronged approach when we are dealing with problems that require multi-pronged solutions. Educating people about bias will always be a necessity, but alone it won’t move the needle. Yes, accountability mechanisms may always be necessary but won’t sustain our progress. I don’t think intrinsic motivation alone will sustain our work. We need all three moving and working at the same time.

A great summary of what makes up the Barefoot Coaching Ltd Coach Training Programme by Andy Chandler PCC. Another week, another animated film targeted at kids but with important takeaways for humanity... #InsideOut2 is an amazing watch and I thought it chimed beautifully with Richard Schwartz's #InternalFamilySystems (#IFS) teachings on the concept of 'parts'. In the film, Riley, aged 13, is in the throes of puberty and getting to grips with bunch of new emotions like anxiety, envy and embarrassment. As well as being a very helpful reminder of what my own tween is going through right now (let's just say my husband and I shared quite a few knowing glances/raised eyebrows/smirks during the film!), here are some of my other takeaways as I think about my #coachingpractice and #clients: 💡 New #emotions emerge at different stages of our life. The art is in embracing them and giving them permission to co-exist with the rest of the gang 💡 Challenging emotions like #anxiety and envy are not trying to hurt us. On the contrary, they are trying to be helpful. (For more on this, please read No Bad Parts by Richard Schwartz) 💡 Suppressing emotions and banishing them to 'the vault' is a short-term solution and...beware - they will find their own way out at some point. 💡 Life is emotionally messy. It's normal! A loving and patient support team around us accepting us for who we are - joy as well as sadness, fear, disgust, etc - can make it easier to navigate. 💡 Life transitions (in this case puberty) can shake our foundations and belief systems and our sense of self can get buried as a result of anxiety and other more challenging emotions. The sense of self is never destroyed but it can take some work to dig it out from under the debris. 💡 Life in multi-colour is way more beautiful than life in blue (the colour blue represents joy in the film). Tuning into our sense of self and accepting it in all its shades puts us on the highway to living life to the fullest Have you seen the film yet? Our free "Leading Others" programme closes today. This was an experiment for us to see: 1. What type of appetite there is to consume audio content in a more guided setting, combined with reflective activities and scenarios. 2. Whether the formula we had cooked up was impactful/useful to our target audience. 3. Whether time-limited free content could work as a way to introduce new people to Assemble You. In all three areas, it's been incredibly useful. We've learned: 1. Yes, a more guided setting is very helpful to certain groups. 2. The formula was good but actually needed a few tweaks (thanks to everyone who provided feedback!) 3. We've had over 200 people register, mostly from organic LinkedIn activity and a couple of email promotions. We're going to make more of these available to our existing clients and partners.
