Makes you think....... Big thanks to Paula Stillman Chartered FCIPD, Jamie Qiu and Roger Steare for speaking at today's www.hrbp.org.uk peer conversation on how HRBPs can help create the future of work. Fascinating to hear how AI can help neurodivergent and dyslexic colleagues in their careers; how the HRBP role should (is?) evolving to create AI frameworks for their organisations that put humanity at the centre; and how power structures in corporations might change as a result of AI - away from what Roger Steare calls "feudal", and undemocratic. One way to prevent much work-related stress (see article below) would be for more ExCos, ExComs, Managing Partners etc to a)resolve more of the issues and tensions amongst themselves rather than have the disagreements, territorial spats & power-grabs ripple down the organisation and b)convene people together to resolve the high level organisational issues and not delegate the risk, uncertainty and lack of psychological safety down the chain by default. There is a 'hands-ON' of leadership that is not about micro-managing, providing the answers or encouraging escalation but that is about actively supporting people to confidently take up responsibility.

Last weekend, I had the privilege of attending the Menopause Experts Group Limited conference, which brought together nearly 80 UK champions from diverse industries, all focused on a crucial topic: menopause. This conference wasn't just an opportunity to connect with like-minded professionals; it was a deep dive into the intricacies of perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause—areas that require urgent attention in workplaces today. Over two days, we were guided by insightful speakers who shared their expertise and experiences. Dr Vikram Sinai Talaulikar emphasized that Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is not a one-size-fits-all solution and must be carefully considered based on each woman’s individual symptoms. The idea that HRT is a trendy solution or a “fear of missing out” purchase must be dispelled. Instead, we need to understand that menopause affects every woman differently, and tailored approaches are vital for long-term health and well-being. Dr. Marva Williams shared her personal, life-threatening health scare that led her to develop products to support women during menopause. She highlighted the critical role of magnesium, not just during menopause but for overall bodily function. This revelation is a reminder that women’s health at every stage, including perimenopause, requires a proactive approach, and employers must be aware of the health factors that affect their workforce. Helen Tomlinson, the Government Champion for Menopause in England, spoke directly to businesses. Her focus is to help employers build effective menopause strategies. As Head of Talent and Inclusion at Adecco, Helen’s insights into creating supportive work environments that recognize and address menopause resonated deeply. The reality is that menopause can trigger a host of additional health challenges, including issues like bladder health, an area often overlooked until a problem arises. Peony Li and Zena Wehbe educated us on this front, introducing "Jude," a supplement designed to improve bladder health—another aspect of wellness employers must understand to support their staff holistically. This conference wasn't merely about networking; it was a vital reminder of the continued education necessary for women to make informed choices about their health. It underscored the reality that our health directly impacts our ability to work and contribute to the economy. As employers prepare for upcoming policy changes, now is the time to understand the broader spectrum of hormonal health, not just for women facing menopause, but for men dealing with andropause as well. Without expert education, we risk perpetuating a gap in understanding that can lead to inadequate workplace policies and support. According to a new survey by Forth, which provides hormone tests for women Two-thirds of people in the UK believe that women face discrimination at work when going through the menopause. Being passed up for promotions and not being taken seriously by their line managers and colleagues were highlighted as key issues. Supporting women through menopause isn’t just about addressing symptoms; it’s about fostering an environment of understanding, empathy, and respect. Remember, if menopause symptoms have a long-term and substantial impact on a woman’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities, these symptoms could be considered a disability. #gender #support #wellbeing

Rsearch from Newcastle University indicates that many children, particularly those who are neurodivergent, are 46 more likely to experience school distress than their neurotypical peers. Children facing challenges in education are undergoing significant trauma, negatively impacting their relationships with parents and caregivers. Their trust in authority figures and their own learning capabilities has been fractured, potentially affecting their future careers. The issues in schools are not just secondary concerns for businesses, but are likely to become primary challenges in the coming decade. Many parents may have to step back from work to provide home education, and when these children enter the workforce, they'll do so with skepticism, difficulty establishing work-life balance, and potential burnout. Having read posts all morning about #MandelaDay, it is my opinion (perhaps unpopular), that so much of this is lip service. The posts look great and the words are so meaningful, but did you actually do something? As service and in memory of Madiba: Go and do something (even if it is small, just do something)! Go and be a the difference in someones life (even if small)! Be positive in the words you use, the words matter! My point, is that whether the company posts about it or not, or you post about it or not, lets not let days like this go by not having let the memory of a legend like Mabida be wasted on lip service! p.s. Don't get me wrong... this is a positive post :) I just want us to make sure we do things as well as say or post them

The British opportunity index, a new data set produced by the Burning Glass Institute, a non-profit research organisation, in partnership with The Economist, looks at how well British employers do at helping people to move on and up.
