When we got together to discuss the early stages of our next Crowsnest report – our bird’s eye view of the trends impacting powerful sectors – we realised that our approach did not reflect our creative process in the work we undertake for our clients. We’re proud of our motto ‘attitude, not age’ here at Free The Birds, it prevents us from taking too narrow a view of a brand’s audience. We love a campaign that demonstrates understanding of its audience, addresses a real problem, and executes a simple concept succinctly.👌 Our lovely client Carers UK recently launched a campaign called This Counts as Care. It aims to reduce by half the time it takes for people to identify themselves as unpaid carers. 💡 Created in conjunction with creative agency MullenLowe Global, the TV campaign is inspired by research that shows many people don't consider caring for a loved one or a family member as care. That subtle but significant shift in a relationship, from simply caring to being a carer, depended on physically or mentally, is often too gradual to notice until months or years have passed. Hence the burning need to spread awareness. 🔥 This is a strong example of a campaign that pinpoints an issue unique to its intended audience, one that many would not have otherwise considered. In just two sentences and a few short vignettes, it conveys an meaningful message that is sure to make people reflect. 🤔 #charity #campaign #charitymarketing #marketing #care

Shooting in small spaces for client work can be difficult but is also very common. Here is a 3 step guide of how I moved through the challenges of this small production space: 🔒Locking down a solid plan for camera placement and subject’s looking room first, before placing lights. ✅ Understanding how I want to shape light in a way that is flattering to the subject but also makes sense for the scene that was created. ⛓️‍💥This example shows when and why I would break the rules of filmmaking: What made space for camera placement, looking room, lighting and eye line didn’t work with available space for staff, crew and safety but the image is still very solid. Know the rules and when to break them. Each scanario is different, at times we face challenges with audio or incidental light that isn’t part of our scene. The important part as an experienced filmmaker is to make an educated decision and build a strong, well exposed set of clips for the editor to work with in post. If you work with small or large studio spaces, how are you lighting them? Interested to see some behind the scenes of what people are working on and creating.
