The Science Based Targets initiative, SBTi, recently published an evidence synthesis report regarding the effectiveness of Carbon offsets in corporate climate targets. Finance for Nature from new ICVCM CCP decisions 📣 Continuing the work to deliver a reformed, high-integrity #VoluntaryCarbonMarket, the The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) has announced CCP-Approval of three methodologies for REDD+ carbon credits that address key challenges in previous approaches. The private sector has a critical role to play in meeting global climate goals and financing climate action. It has been estimated that voluntary carbon markets could channel an additional $50 billion in climate finance from the private sector by 2030. 📈 With these new decisions, high-quality carbon credit supply becomes available so that companies can take high-integrity approaches to financing climate action in line with VCMI frameworks. This week's listing includes projects seeking registration and/or verification in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the Plastic Waste Reduction Standard, the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards (CCBS), and the Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta). The projects are located in various geographic regions, including the United States of America, India, Turkey, Cambodia, and Peru. The #VoluntaryCarbonMarket can play a powerful role in channeling finance from global companies to Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPs & LCs) if integrity is in place. The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) Board members representing IPs & LCs are working to select members of IPs & LCs worldwide to lead a new VCM global engagement forum. In response to demand articulated by IPs & LCs, the global forum is being created to elevate and enforce the rights of IPs & LCs within the VCM, led by their interests, values, principles, and vision. 💡Why is this important? 🍀Self-led: The independent forum is led by and for IPs & LCs to elevate their rights and participation in the #VCM. The first convening, set for June, follows two years of consultation between ICVCM, Indigenous Peoples and local community leaders. 🍀Building capacity and awareness: One of its goals is to enhance the understanding and ability of other market participants to effectively collaborate with IPs & LCs, ensuring they can make informed decisions about engaging with, and participating in, the VCM. 🍀Scaling ambition: In parallel, the forum will also inform the Integrity Council’s work, ensuring that ambition in environmental and social safeguards relating to the VCM continues to increase. Last week at COP29, the UK Government launched the Principles for Voluntary Carbon and Nature Market Integrity, setting a standard for the responsible use of carbon and nature markets 📣 These principles aim to ensure environmental credibility, foster trust, and drive meaningful climate and biodiversity action: 1️⃣ Use credits in addition to ambitious actions within value chains Credits should complement, not replace, efforts to reduce emissions and environmental impacts within an organisation’s operations and supply chain. 2️⃣ Use high-integrity credits Credits must meet rigorous criteria to ensure they deliver genuine environmental benefits, including independent verification, prevention of double-counting, and transparency about potential social and environmental harms. 3️⃣ Measure and disclose the planned use of credits as part of sustainability reporting Organisations should publicly share detailed information about their credit use, including project types, certification standards, and alignment with environmental objectives. 4️⃣ Plan ahead Transition plans should incorporate long-term, science-based targets (e.g., net zero by 2050) and outline how credits fit into broader sustainability strategies. 5️⃣ Make accurate green claims using appropriate terminology Claims related to credit use must be truthful and clearly communicate environmental impacts, avoiding misleading terms like "carbon neutral" without substantiation. 6️⃣ Cooperate with others to support the growth of high-integrity markets Collaboration among market participants is key to promoting transparency, standardisation, equitable access, and technological innovation in carbon and nature markets.
