After #COP29, what’s next for carbon markets? 🎤 Tune into this bonus episode of S&P Global's ESG Insider podcast to hear VCMI’s Mark Kenber discuss the outcomes of Baku and what they mean for the future of carbon markets. 🗨️ "Article 6 rules were finally agreed, and that gives confidence to those who are developing projects, looking at investing in the market, developing markets at a national level and, of course, buyers, that there is now a UN imprimatur on project-based carbon markets," Mark said. "And with luck, that will encourage more investment." 🔗 Listen on https://lnkd.in/d22Qd4ZG #CarbonMarkets #Podcast #Article6 #COP29 #Climate #CarbonCredits #VCM #VCMs #ClimateAction #ESG
About us
VCMI is an international non-profit empowering companies, governments and non-state actors to realize the full potential of high-integrity voluntary carbon markets (VCMs). VCMI provides guidance on how different actors can make voluntary use of carbon credits to make a meaningful impact on climate action. Here's how: 1.) VCMI's Claims Code of Practice enables companies to make ‘Carbon Integrity’ Claims, recognizing their achievements in going above and beyond science-aligned emissions cuts to accelerate global net zero. 2.) The Access Strategies Program supports host-country governments to establish policies and processes necessary to build and strengthen a cohesive governance of VCMs that underpin their country’s participation in high-integrity voluntary carbon markets.

If you've ever wondered how to develop a carbon project from start to finish, here's a handy visual that breaks it down. Our recent guide, published with Climate Focus and UNDP, breaks down the carbon project lifecycle into three key phases, ensuring transparency, community involvement, and legal compliance at each step. 💡 ➡️ Download it on https://lnkd.in/eWx8gUJF
🇲🇽 THE CARBON PROJECT CYCLE IN THE VCM | From our "Best Practices Guide for Developing Carbon Market Projects in Yucatán" (see below!) 🤔 Wondering how to develop a carbon project from start to finish? Our guide breaks the carbon project lifecycle into three essential phases, ensuring transparency, community involvement, and legal compliance at each step. Phase 1️⃣: Planning and design focuses on assessing the economic, social, and legal feasibility of a project. Here, developers identify the appropriate methodologies, establish early connections with local communities, and plan for transparent benefit-sharing. Key questions include: o How to determine whether an activity can generate #carboncredits? o How to identify the methodology and #carbonstandard? o How can a project developer determine if a project is legal and financially viable? o Who holds the legal rights to carbon removals in Mexico? o Are there legal processes required prior to developing a carbon project in Mexico or in #Yucatán? o How should a developer identify key actors when designing and implementing a project within the context of #ejido land ownership? Phase 2️⃣: Development involves executing project activities, conducting monitoring and verification, and finalizing benefit-sharing agreements to ensure communities receive their fair share. Key steps are: o Developing the project design document o Validation o Registration o Monitoring and verification Phase 3️⃣: Sales centers on carbon credit transactions. While sales often start once credits are issued, they can sometimes begin as early as the planning phase, enabling developers to secure funding and ensure market success. VCMI’s Access Strategies Toolkit offers governments and policymakers guidance to unlock the full potential of high-integrity carbon markets, maximizing the social, environmental, and economic benefits they can bring. 🛠️🌱 Developed in partnership with Climate Focus and UNDP, and available in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, it sets out key considerations for countries deciding whether, why, how, and when to engage with #VCMs. In this article, we break down the Toolkit into five simple steps: ✅ Step 1: Decide if, and when, and to engage with voluntary carbon markets. ✅ Step 2: Determine finance needs to implement your Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). ✅ Step 3: Determine the role for carbon markets in NDC achievement. ✅ Step 4: Address legal and institutional matters. ✅ Step 5: Ensure high-integrity carbon market activities, following guidance set out by VCMI and The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM). When locally anchored, globally connected, and used with integrity, carbon markets can drive investment to projects that benefit people and nature. 🌍 Success depends on sound governance and strategic planning — which is where VCMI's Access Strategies Program comes in, supporting host-country governments to create robust policies and frameworks that ensure effective integration of voluntary carbon markets within national climate plans. 📝 🔗 Read our recent article to better understand how to use the Toolkit: https://lnkd.in/ezgWqG_7 🔗 Learn more about VCMI's Access Strategies Program: https://lnkd.in/e3RzvSRZ #ClimateAction #VCMs #CarbonMarkets #CarbonCredits #Sustainability #CarbonFinance

Carbon Integrity Claims showcase ambitious corporate climate leadership. 🌍 Sustainability teams around the world have all they need to use VCMI's Claims Code of Practice as a clear, step-by-step framework to make a Claim, ensuring best practice when it comes to using, and making claims about, #carboncredits as part of a robust climate strategy. Here’s how it works: ✅ Step 1: Comply with VCMI's Foundational Criteria to demonstrate corporate best practice on climate. ✅ Step 2: Choose an appropriate Claim to make (Silver, Gold, or Platinum). ✅ Step 3: Purchase the appropriate amount of high-quality carbon credits, in line with The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM)'s CCPs. ✅ Step 4: Follow VCMI's Monitoring, Reporting & Assurance Framework to submit documentation and make a Claim. Here's why it matters: 📖 The Claims Code of Practice provides science-based guidance for companies to make voluntary use of carbon credits as part of net-zero transitions and make credible claims about this use. 🏆 Carbon Integrity Claims empower companies to credibly demonstrate their commitment to the planet by accelerating global net zero beyond internal decarbonization efforts. 📢 By making a Claim, a company can showcase its dedication to climate leadership and advancing Paris Agreement goals — which in turn signals corporate responsibility to investors, employees, customers, and other key stakeholders. 🔗 Read our guide for detailed instructions and start your journey to making a Claim: https://lnkd.in/dcgZF4c3 #ClimateLeadership #NetZero #CarbonIntegrity #Sustainability #CorporateResponsibility #ClimateAction
