Here are my top tips for nailing down that site navigation: ➡️ The navigation menu should be straightforward, with clear categories that help users quickly understand where they are and where to go next. Organise by popular categories like “Shop All,” “Best Sellers,” or by product types! ➡️ For stores with a wide range of products, a search bar is a must. Brand v Performance Marketing (and why it's better to invest in both) With the exception of low value impulse purchases, most people instinctively fear buying from businesses they don't know - a fear that tends to increase with the price of the item or service under consideration. They worry that they could end up in a situation where you take their cash and then supply an inferior, sub-standard product or a poor service, leaving them with no way of getting their money back. No matter how good you are at promoting what you do with ads and offers to try and make sales in the here-and-now, you're always going to rub up against this problem. This is one of the limitations of Performance Marketing - campaigns designed to drive purchasing action in the short term. These include pay-per-click search and shopping ads on Google, and similar ads on Facebook etc. You can usually spot Performance Marketing ads because they use language designed to create a sense of urgency (things like "hurry, offer ends soon" and "limited stocks available") combined with a special offer ("10% off when you buy today"). Performance Marketing definitely does work, but that fear of buying is an issue. That's where Brand Marketing comes in. As well as raising awareness of your business in the first place, Brand Marketing helps to establish your credibility and build trust. It consists of activities conducted over the long term, which include things like creating and distributing content that not only informs your audiences but that showcases your know-how and capabilities (think blogs, whitepapers, bespoke research and more) as well as securing positive media mentions with PR, creating and sharing success stories in the form of case studies, and obtaining reviews and testimonials from past customers. The factual content reassures people that you know what you're doing, whereas the customer reflections (what we call 'social proof') reassure people that you do it well. There's an equation that describes how Brand and Performance Marketing intersect: (Need + Solution) - Fear of Buying = Sales Performance Marketing matches your solution (product or service) to the need of your customer. Brand Marketing is what removes the fear of buying. I'll leave you with some interesting stats: According to a global survey of more than 1,400 marketers carried out in Q3/Q4 of last year, 36% say they will increase investment in Brand Marketing for 2024, up from 23% in 2022. There's a reason for that and it's the growing recognition that it complements Performance Marketing spend. Food for thought. #BrandMarketing #PerformanceMarketing

ICYMI - last Thursday was the Vervaunt Pulse Ecommerce Summit, now in its third year, and such a fixture in my diary that even a half term scheduling conflict couldn’t deter me from going. The day started with a presentation from Josh Duggan and Paul Rogers that many have suggested felt like a live action version of their monthly newsletter (link in the comments) - and finished with an inspirational keynote from ASKET’s Vidar Trojenborg. There were a number of highlights throughout, but for me, personally, amongst all the trends and tech - it was a reassuring reminder that the fundamentals remain the same: 🎬The importance of brand and storytelling 🎯Why you need to really know your customer 📈The value of testing for incrementality and the dangers of focussing too much on the top line 🔮And finally, how branded services may once again be the future of digital marketing - and perhaps, even, the future of selling Lots of familiar faces and wonderful new connections, too. My top advice for businesses with large databases of unconverted leads: Use email and SMS remarketing to convert the leads you've already paid for. Look, you’ve already spent hundreds of thousands of pounds generating leads in the last few years. Now, it’s your time to reap the benefits by getting some lower-cost conversions through email and SMS. In our experience, it can cost you 80% less than what it does to convert a cold sale from digital marketing channels like Google and Facebook. The bottom line: Make sure you’re leveraging your database to the best of its ability. So, you start to get back some of the investment you’ve made in building it. But whatever you do… Don’t let an agency or somebody else take advantage of all that money you’ve spent by trying to charge you an inflated fee per sale. 😛

Search by Image is marketers secret weapon in the run up to a busy Christmas. Search bids only go up from this week onwards for retailers and many categories hoping to make their year in the golden quarter. Three standout trends as we go into this critical trading period: - Generic search has seen a sizeable increase. - Unique search is 15% of total search. - Traffic is dropping with the introduction of AIOs. It’s an indication the price is still on peoples’ minds and this means that people are shopping product type and categories more. Making it tougher for brands to stand out. This shift from brand searches is exasperated by the increase in shopping ads, the removal of manual bidding strategies, and the slippage of search into social channels. Being able to instantly satisfy inspiration in a busy and blurry shopping environment is an advantage. And, the brands that are leveraging Search by Image to taking this advantage. Searches via Google Lens has jumped from 12 billion searches a month. The number of visual searches has jumped to 20 billion per month across 2024 (partially helped by Circle). There are number of things brands need to do when optimising for search by images - high resolution product images available in multiple angles, make sure logos are clear, include good product details by adding alt text to images, and keep product information up-to-date to optimising Google’s Shopping Grpah. How we're generating 1 lead for every 136 prospects we contact in ecom... This is on a new campaign that we just launched. So far it has the stats shown in the image below - it's early days... However, we've been working this particular customer for over 9 months now, and we know we're getting close to absolutely cracking open their market. This campaign currently has over 1,800 prospects in it, so we're only 15% of the way into it, and the whole TAM for it is at least 11k. With a bit of 'back of the napkin' math, if these stats hold, we'll generate 13 leads from this campaign over the next week, and could scale it all the way to 80 leads in the next month. Our booking conversion fluctuates anywhere between 20% and 50%, so this would get our client 16 to 40 meetings through late Nov - early Dec. Oh and his close rate from our bookings is currently at an astounding 80%, meaning he'd sign on at least a dozen new clients for himself before the new year. Outbound is a money printer... Now the actual strategy we've honed in on here is actually quite simple - but it's come from a process of testing and iterating until we've gotten rid of all the fluff. Here's the keys: 1. Infrastructure From our analysis of our client's TAM that we did during our market mapping service, the ecom stores he targets are pretty evenly split between Google and Outlook at about 50/40 with the remaining 10% being other less common email clients. This campaign is a Google to Google one, and we are seeing strong performance again on Azure-Outlook so will use that for Outlook users. 2. Messaging Nearly across the board for all our customers in every industry and doing any service, we are using a very similar messaging thesis at the moment. Distilled down, it's: • clearer subject lines - tell them what they're going to look at • strong personalization right away relevant to the offer and timely - think signals • simple language to communicate the reason we're reaching out - you might call this 'the offer' but I'd say it's even simpler than that • a real CTA - we're pitching them, they know that, so let's get to business Some trends I noticed that led us here was finding that when there isn't a good message, you need to overly rely on gimmicks like a 'no-brainer' offer or value-based CTAs. I hate both of those, and so do my customers. *Not saying they don't have their place too, but imo they need to part of a broader strategy that is really well laid out and executed. Bonus: 3. Warm Calling You're just not going to book at a good rate in most industries through email anymore without picking up the phone. Out of the 2 leads so far, the one we called we booked, and the other is from Australia where we couldn't get their number.
