Last week Entropy held the UK advertiser trade body ISBA's first ever session focussing on Amazon ads. We took members through a case study showing how our faster, cheaper approach to Marketing Mix Modelling (MMM) can be used to measure and optimise the channel for incremental sales. Amazon spend still dominates retail media spend globally. However, as the discussion with some of the largest advertisers in the UK confirmed the majority don't measure and optimise it optimally for incremental sales. What is the consequence of that? Well, simply put you almost certainly could be making your budget work significantly harder by maximising its effectiveness and efficiency. Which of these statements about TV is true? 1. The amount of TV we are watching has declined over the years 2. TV is the highest attention advertising channel 3. We watch about 4-5 hours of TV per day on average in the UK 4. TV advertising is the most effective channel for driving emotion The answer is ALL of these are true. Whilst we are watching slightly less TV than in the past, we still spend significantly more time watching it than any other channel. Sure, how and where we are watching it has changed, but the fact is that TV is still the best way to reach a broad audience, has the highest attention and the most trusted channel out there. As Thinkbox mention in its Profit Ability 2 report: "When sustained effects are accounted for, average profit ROI increases to £4.11. In particular, TV (Linear and BVOD) has a very strong sustained effect, responsible for 54.7% of the full advertising-generated profit, with an average full profit ROI of £5.61 for every pound spent. Linear TV alone accounts for 46.6% of full advertising-generated profit, and an average full profit ROI of £5.94. So whilst we are often told "TV is dead", that is simply false. It is still the best way to grow your brand, in my opinion. But don't just listen to me, brands like Amazon and Google are spending more on TV advertising than ever before and the trend looks likely to continue. TikTok is incentivizing UK merchants to use its platform through a new initiative called the '£1 Million Club’. The program is aimed at helping new UK-based merchants achieve £1 million in revenue through a series of special incentives and support, all at no extra cost. The '£1 Million Club' provides five key benefits for new businesses of all sizes: ▪️Commission-Free Sales: Up to 90 days of 0% commission on sales from June 23 to September 30. ▪️Free Storage and Fulfillment: Free storage and fulfillment services to streamline inventory management and logistics. ▪️Dedicated Seller Support: Receive help with onboarding, product listing, and after-sales services to ensure a smooth start. ▪️Seller Training: Access the TikTok Shop Seller Academy to learn about market trends, operational skills, and success stories. ▪️Marketing Assistance: TikTok Shop will help plan and execute marketing activities to effectively reach your target audience. This program follows the success of British beauty brand Made By Mitchell, which became the first UK brand to achieve $1 million in sales in a single day on TikTok Shop, thanks to a 12-hour live marathon where one product sold every second. Meanwhile, in the U.S... Major advertisers have started cutting back on their TikTok ad spending in response to the looming TikTok ban. Overall TikTok ad spend declined in both April and May, with big brands like Target, DoorDash, Bayer, and Procter & Gamble significantly reducing their ad spend by up to 30%. Despite these cutbacks, TikTok still has a large audience that can be leveraged in the short term. The platform remains popular, meaning less competition and more opportunities for smaller advertisers. For now, advertisers must make a judgment call. A brand new A+ Content type called "Complimentary Products" is on the horizon.  This game-changer lets you showcase multiple ASINs within your product pages, creating a seamless "frequently bought together" or "buy it with" experience.  Think of it as a supercharged version of the Brand Story A+ content! Here's the scoop (what we know so far): -Currently in Beta: This feature is only available to select brands in the UK. -Boost Sales: Promote complementary products and encourage bundle purchases. -Enhanced Customer Experience: Offer a more convenient shopping journey for your customers. Waitrose recently dropped a video featuring S Club 7, a big-budget production that probably looked great on paper, but missed the mark on TikTok.  Why? It felt like a TV ad in disguise... Let's be honest, TikTok isn't TV - It's all about super quick, super fun, short-form videos.  So, long, high-production videos turn users off before the video even starts.  In comparison to Waitrose's other recent TikTok, it hit over 11.6K likes all because it was more authentic, real, and perfectly tailored for TikTok.  Brands must embrace TikTok for what it is.  Even if you’re creating an ad, it has to look and feel like a TikTok.  The difference in engagement between these two videos shows why brands need to fully commit to native TikTok creative if they want real results. This morning, I had the pleasure of participating in the judging session for the UK Search Awards, once again reviewing an impressive array of high-quality campaigns from across the Search Marketing industry highlighting that our industry continues to overflow with exceptional ideas and results. Now, this year marks a milestone for me, as it’s the 10th consecutive year that I’ve supported Don't Panic Events as a volunteer judge. Over the past decade, I’ve had the honour of judging several Don’t Panic Events awards, including the UK and EU Search Awards, Ecommerce Awards, and Agency Awards, to name a few. Each time, I’ve carefully reviewed countless entries, diving deep into campaign strategies, execution, objectives, and results to ensure that the most deserving work gets recognised. This process has taken quite literally hundreds of hours of my time over the years, unpaid, but I’ve never hesitated to contribute. And that got me thinking. Why do I continue to do it? I’ve heard all sorts of misconceptions over the years about awards, from claims of influence to “pay-to-win” setups, often from those who haven’t experienced the process firsthand. The truth is, as a judge, there’s a HUGE amount of work that goes on behind the scenes. We scrutinise every detail, validate results using industry tools, and benchmark campaigns against one another – all with rigorous attention. Multiply that across numerous judges and no single judge can sway the outcome. It’s a truly robust process and I am proud to help ensure honesty and impartiality continues to exist within these prestigious awards for our industry. I also remain committed to giving my time because I believe that great work deserves recognition. Beyond the marketing benefits for the winners, it’s about seeing the genuine excitement and pride on the faces of winners - knowing their hard work is being celebrated. It’s incredibly rewarding to be a part of that moment. It’s also rewarding to know that the winners will leave the awards ceremony incredibly motivated to keep pushing their work and our industry forward. For me to be able to play even a small part in contributing to the growth and support of our industry, as a judge, motivates me to keep doing my part. The whole Ecom game is holding their wood right now. My brand of the week - Pick’em. I’m sure you recognise them (15+ m views on socials). Countless celeb endorsements. What really stands out to me is how they’ve taken a mundane item that’s been around forever into a modern hit. The product innovation is class. Great reviews and consciousness translates well. Eco-friendly packaging and responsibly sourced ingredients big plus 👍 Their content game is killer. They let their founder lead the conversation, snappy vids, well edited. This roles into their Creator Hub. Why not make fans promoters too? Build your own community ecosystem that serves each other. Solid website, navigation and CTA’s on every section constantly prompted to buy. Lightweight product, easy shipping = less expenses & higher margins. Selling on Amazon too meaning they're covered on fulfilment & analytics. Just a really clever strategy all round. Big shoutout to Max Schröpfer, Folkert Bowler & Jonny Caspari they've set the bar very high. Who shall I keep an eye on next?
