The global tyre manufacturer Bridgestone EMEA is calling for the Government to take further measures in a bid to encourage more motorists to buy an electric car. Whilst the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) predict that 414,000 EVs will be sold in the UK during 2024, a study conducted by the tyre brand found 27 percent of drivers do not intend buying an electric model. Be interested to hear from other converters, lease co's, LCV dealer network etc on the EV numbers they're seeing currently? Had a look through our system this morning... out of the multiple hundreds of completed vehicles we have on site awaiting collection only 2.75% of them are EV, and out of the multiple hundreds of vehicles that are currently in production in the factory, 0.00% of them are EV...! Is this just a random blip in the numbers due to various timings this end or is this a trend that others are seeing too? Does 2035 have anything to do with it? Will we see a change in figures after 4th July? 🤔

POST-RECOVERY CHECK SAVES CASH Worcester's Mobile Mechanic have a high regard for breakdown companies. They work 24/7 in all weathers, often under extreme pressure. Fortunately we always check what the patrol states is the fault and seven times out of ten they are correct. With this incident it was late and dark, and to make it worse, wet. The patrol attended the lone woman whose car had broken down quickly. The car would not turn over and when the patrol used his professional starter pack to supply power to the battery, the starter clicked. The patrol said it was probably the starter motor and the customer was recovered home. She could have had the car dropped at WMM’s premises and then had a lift home, but after waiting and the stress of the breakdown, she opted to go home which we understand exactly. WMM were asked to quote to change the starter motor. I explained that we would want to check the fault before buying an expensive component. After the car arrived at the garage, a broken earth strap was quickly discovered. Once this was renewed, the car started as it should. #repairs #repairservices #repairservice #diagnostics #breakdown

This has never been an issue, however with recent supply issues and the increased requirement for Electric Vehicles which are not prevalent in abundance on hire fleets, it’s becoming more of a challenge. Therefore at Motiv8 we want to create a database that will help us and other event agencies source these vehicles when required for short term hire. 🚗 ZEV mandate knock-on effects ‘catastrophic’ for residual values, MG commercial boss warns 🚗 Car manufacturer efforts to comply with the UK Government’s ZEV mandate are having a serious impact on EV residual values, and could in turn lead to higher leasing costs for fleets. That’s according to MG Motor UK Ltd commercial director Guy Pigounakis, who highlighted the measures some manufacturers were taking to comply with the mandate, which requires them to sell an increasing percentage of EVs annually, or face fines. This week’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Transport News Brief lead comment, Rising new van uptake but the pressure is on Last month was the busiest October for the new light commercial vehicle (LCV) market in three years, according to SMMT’s latest figures, with 2.4% growth and almost 27,000 vans, pickups and 4x4s joining UK roads. Demand was also at its greenest in 2024, with electric van deliveries rising for the first time in five months, up 61.8% to 2,263 units. Fleets opting to decarbonise should be celebrated, but too few are in comparison with the UK’s mandated levels this year, with EVs representing just 5.6% of all new LCV registrations since January – a considerable distance behind our 10% ambition. It is a concern as manufacturers have made big investments to grow the choice of EVs for fleets, with more than 30 exciting and competitive models. It was welcome and necessary that the Plug-in Van Grant will continue to be available in the next financial year but, evidently, further intervention is going to be needed. Every lever will need to be pulled, especially with the mandate for EV sales planned to rise to 16% of the market next year. Fleet operators need to be confident that going electric is operationally viable but chargepoint infrastructure, certainly that which is suited to the specific needs of vans, is lacking, and remains a worry for operators that want to decarbonise. Among the actions needed is regulatory review to treat all zero emission vans equally and safely – from MOT testing and drivers’ hours to tachograph and speed limiter rules – to avoid discouraging investment. It was positive this issue was raised by Sarah Edwards MP at the House of Commons last week with Secretary of State for Transport Louise Haigh stating that review, initiated by the previous government, is being continued. It was disappointing for the pickup sector, though, that government is not reflecting HMRC’s decision on double cab taxation in February and will, from April 2025, treat those with a payload above one tonne as cars for capital allowances and benefits in kind. It is set to put the future of new pickup market at serious risk, heaping costs on industries which depend on these vehicles, including farming, construction, utilities and the self-employed. In a tough environment for businesses to invest, it needs to be easier and not harder for operators to replace old vehicles in their fleets, which is the quickest path to decarbonising road transport.

⚡Effects of European Tariffs on Chinese BEVs: ⚡ ➡️ Several European branches of MG Motor UK Ltd state they have stock until November when final tariffs will be decided. However, MG and NIO do not rule out the possibility of price increases for BEVs. ➡️ Dacia will not increase prices for the Spring model. ➡️ BYD is building a new factory in Turkey ($1 billion), a country with a trade agreement with the EU, in addition to their ongoing construction in Hungary. ➡️ The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), says sanctions have more negative than positive effects, especially for Germany.
