Interesting stat for photographers and videographers.... Earlier in the year I did an analysis of the sources of work from the previous 12 months. I listed every job, then in the next column listed how they'd found me. If it was from a referral, I then went to the next column and listed how the person who referred me had found me. Once I had the original source listed for every job, I grouped them. I then calculated the job as a percentage of total turnover. And the results showed that 75% of my turnover in the last 12 months had come from....LinkedIn! Yet so many photographers and videographers are under-utilising this platform! #photography #videography #photo #video #linkedin

REVOLUTION: The annual conference of the Farnborough Aerospace Consortium (FAC) at Brooklands Museum was a superb illustration of the value of sector associations. The speakers were of a high quality and included some from the biggest names in aerospace and aviation, including GKN Aerospace, Airbus and Boeing. The head of aerospace at the Department of Business and Trade also spoke, and others addressing the delegates brought insight, intelligence and sound advice - and how to find funding. It was heard that the industry is on the cusp of a revolution that will have a similar impact to that of Whittle's jet engine. If you are in the aerospace, aviation, defence, or space sector - or their supply chains - then joining FAC could be of great advantage. A growing number of organisations are being targeted by social media 'auditors', who are individuals who attends a business or industrial site, stands outside and films the activities going on within, including sometimes with use of a drone. While some claim to promote educating the public, the real motive often appears to be financial gain through sensationalised videos. Handling such individuals the wrong way can have very public and embarrassing repercussions for the businesses, and individual employees, that have been targeted. Our article goes into more detail about what these auditors do and why, as well as the legal position on their activities. We also look at what employers can do to prepare and protect their workers. My latest opinion piece for #OrbitalToday. The UK Space Agency has quietly overhauled its working environment. The National Accounting Office report released in July kept to this softly, quietly (to the external world, at least) approach, and essentially buried the issue in among other points. UKSA should be commended for not letting the issue die a quiet death. The agency has opened four management positions, including a Head of Corporate Governance. Apart from my defence contract work, I'm also a voice actor and audiobook narrator, and both those skills are mutually supportive. Meanwhile, and failing miserably to being able to stick to any kind of diet unless it contains cheese toasties and chocolate, I've been quietly working away at a debut novel. This is now nearing readiness for pitching to traditional literary agencies. The art and craft of writing a compelling story is a skill set I've had to learn about these last 18 months along with getting it beta-read, developmentally edited, copy edited, and leaning about how to draft an effective pitch, or query letter, to potential literary agents. With everything else going on professionally and domestically, it's been, and continues to be, a long, hard road - but the end is now in distant sight. In a nutshell: George’s ancestor was killed in Flanders in May 1915 at the infamous Hill 60. On the 100th anniversary of his passing and in commemoration, George wears authentic repro uniform and kit, and walks his ancestor’s marching route to the former trenches. He sleeps in the same barn as his ancestor did and wakes up the next morning. Except everything is catastrophically wrong – he's somehow been transported back in time to May 1915. He is marooned. His world, his fiancée, and an entire century have suddenly been stripped from him. British soldiers demand to know who he is. Without thinking, he produces his 2015 Reserve Officer military ID showing his rank of Major. A mistake. Now they see an officer, masquerading as a private. Probably a deserter. And there is only one punishment for deserters - execution by firing squad. Meanwhile, in May 2015, his fiancée and friends launch a frantic search, unaware of how he vanished. When George's haversack reappears - beaten, torn, and inexplicably aged beyond its years - they begin to fear the worst. What they don't know is that George is desperately trying to return to them, racing against time and only one step ahead of the firing squad. If he can’t get back, he faces execution, and the love of his life will be gone. A considerable effort is given to creating a shallow depth of field (DoF) in order to create a more cinematographic look, enabling the cinematographer to guide the viewer to concentrate ONLY on the small areas of sharp focus. However, there are occasions when it is preferable for the viewer to be able to see focussed images over a great range, so this is a short treatment of methods to creating a large DoF. #Space: Under a new contract announced today, Goonhilly Earth Station will provide deep space communications services to the UK Space Agency and international partners from its satellite Earth station in Cornwall. Space agencies and companies use a global network of large antennas to enhance deep space communications and transfer data between their spacecraft and controllers on Earth. However, as the number of space missions beyond Earth orbit increases, the capacity of these existing services is reaching its limit.
