[Covers both AI and Islam] I was recently invited to present at a conference on Islam & Artificial Intelligence. My presentation on "What is AI?" is below. This is my best effort to make an accessible introduction to AI from an Islamic perspective (with slides here: http://walee.dk/aislides for those who want to scan the content). So many highlights, but one that I am still thinking about is using analogical reasoning to analyze AI from an Islamic perspective. There is a lot of discussion in past Islamic works around the rules for trained animals (e.g. if your trained dog hurts some livestock). Some of the scholars drew an analogy to AI and it is surprisingly appropriate. After all, according to some people, LLMs are just stochastic parrots :-). I'm interested to know what most people might think of this? ❔ So I just read from a post by Al Jazeera Media Network on Instagram that said "Gen-Z and Millennials are shifting towards old-school phones", primarily because of how addictive social apps are these days and how they spent most of their time viewing screens. It also explained how, as a result of this, companies are emerging that are solely focused on developing these "old-school" phones to cater this and I think they actually might capture some traction. But what if they don't need to be old-school? What if we've had these AI-Powered Mini-phones, that rely on voice commands and advanced scheduling and automation features which would enable all the "productive tasks" and yet keep all the dirt away? I'm excited to share that I've completed the "Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF)" course from DeepLearning.AI! This course was a fantastic journey into the world of reinforcement learning (RL) and how human feedback can improve large language models. I learned about the basics of RLHF, how it works, and why it’s important. I also got hands-on experience tuning a large language model with RLHF techniques, evaluating its performance, and setting up Google Cloud for these experiments. This course has equipped me with valuable skills that I’m eager to apply in real-world projects. If you're interested in AI and machine learning, I highly recommend this course!

My first week as a SWE Fellow at Headstarter AI has been an incredible journey, filled with learning, growth, and valuable insights. One of the highlights was attending the "Our Pathways to Tech" event, hosted by Yasin Ehsan 🚀, Faizan Ahmed, and the Headstarter team. The event featured amazing speakers like Nabeel Alamgir🦄, Shariar Kabir, Miguel Acero, and Dustin Beadle, who shared their wisdom on thriving in the tech industry. Here are some of the key takeaways that resonated with me: 1. Nabeel Alamgir's advice about taking ownership of our decisions and viewing rejections as opportunities to improve was particularly impactful. A few thoughts after visiting the Hadrian library - Hadrian library was estimated to have housed 17000 books. This would make it one of largest in the ancient world. In comparison, the library of Alexandria was estimate to have 200,000 to 700000; Google Books 40 million. - Everyone of us have access to that much information in our pockets. 17000 books would fit on a 32 Gb Kindle Paperwhite.
