As colleagues meet at #IHEF2024 this week, it is time for those working in UK universities to #lobby those that represent them. It is critical to impress upon #highereducation sector bodies, the importance of immediately “investing in international futures!” Robust, representative Non-EU #graduateoutcomes & destinations data is immediately available from Asia Careers Group SDN BHD to all UK universities [& has been since 2019,] the only barrier is the reluctance of those that represent the UK #highered sector to act in their members best interests. With many UK Higher #Education Institutions facing significant cost cutting & mass redundancies, we should all question how we got here? With record numbers of #internationalstudents & the UK emerging from the #pandemic relatively unscathed, those working in #internationaleducation are right to ask those acting in their interests “what went wrong?” Since 2019 the warning signs have been there in black & white, the fate of the UK #highered sector has been foretold numerous times, in the #highereducation press & beyond. (See comments) If the sector wish to change the narrative they must all lobby those that represent them, at #IHEF & other public forums to impress upon them, that an annual collective investment by sector bodies of just £350,000 in Non-EU graduate outcomes data would in many ways protect & #future proof a sector worth over £40 billion to the UK economy. This will be critical if Vivienne Stern, CEO of Universities UK, is correct when she says there is “a very high risk of a manifesto from The Conservative Party that includes a commitment to removing the graduate route”. The Labour Party likely to follow suit, in a fight to win the #redwall. Investing in Non-EU Graduate Outcomes is a way to immediately influence MAC & provide all UK universities a Plan B to increase international #studentrecruitment & support their existing #internationalstudents transition successfully to the workforce back in their home countries. If the sector evidence now that inbound international student #recruitment is largely #immigration neutral, with by far the majority of #internationalstudents returning to their home countries & into successful #careers following their studies. Labour to Review UK’s International Education Strategy The new Labour government has announced plans to review the UK’s International Education Strategy to ensure it remains an effective tool for promoting education exports and aligning with current priorities. Stakeholder engagement will be central to the process. Sir Steve Smith, reappointed as the UK’s International Education Champion, will continue his work to maximize international opportunities. The strategy, first launched in 2019, aimed to boost education exports to £35 billion and attract 600,000 international students annually by 2030. This review is a crucial step in adapting to the evolving global education landscape. Important research on #schoolfood in secondary schools was published today. Thank you, Professor Greta Defeyter, for inviting Future Foundations to be part of this important research that puts young people at the heart, exploring how we improve #schoolfood for young people in secondary schools. There is so little research in this space or can-do solutions informed by research to improve young people's access to affordable and appealing food. Food has a big impact on young people's ability to learn and thrive, and we have found participating in this research project immensely helpful in our thinking and planning. Whilst our focus has been on #afterschoolfood which we think is the playground of possibility, for creating space and time for young people & communities to enjoy good food together untilising school canteen facilities, we are keen to explore ways for CanTeam to work with schools to create a whole day and whole school/food approach, and will be drawing on this research and the insights shared by the young people to inform how we will further pilot and scale CanTeam, with the support of Big Change #bigedchallenge. Delighted Shenel S. who has led on the launch of CanTeam in #maidenhead & is not working with us to pilot at scale, represented us for the codesign workshop. Looking forward to working with the stakeholders involved in the research to implement the findings together. We will share our further thoughts & reflections on the research soon... The findings from this article in TES are based on data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study, which tracks the lives of young people born in 2000-02. The study examined GCSE performance while accounting for factors like family income, parental occupation, and home ownership. Core Subjects Performance: Private school students in England no longer outperform state school students in GCSEs for English, maths, and science when results are adjusted for socioeconomic background. State school students actually perform better in these core subjects. Creative Arts Subjects: Despite the gap closing in core subjects, private school students continue to achieve higher results in creative arts subjects like music, drama, and art, even after adjusting for socioeconomic background. Researchers have their own thoughts about why this is. But I'm interested to hear from my own network. What do you think the reason is? What factors influence creative subjects in state schools?
