Yesterday, we had the privilege of hearing from Friedrich Faulhammer the Rector of Danube University Krems ( University for Continuing Education Krems) at our #Innovativeuniversities Webinar!
The discussion highlighted how universities must adapt to demographic shifts and technological advancements to remain relevant and effective. I think that in 5-10 years the continuing education will be moved to the center of activity of any university. So, let’s learn today from the experience of pioneers
The Rector emphasized the importance of blending the traditional intellectual climate of universities with the needs of a non-traditional students. This involves embracing flexible education models that cater to diverse learning styles and life situations. We tried digging deeper into this question. Please, share your views on the matter after you watch the video.
Teaching is a field that evolves as researchers, neuroscientists and practitioners find more effective ways to reach students. Yet far too many schools still use outdated, ineffective teaching and assessment methods.
There is growing evidence that the teachers need to constantly seek more effective ways to help students learn and look for more creative and engaged ways to assess their learning.
Best teachers keep learning. They believe in
Peter Drucker’s words, “We now accept the fact that learning is a lifelong process of keeping abreast of change.” If you are the one who is constantly pushing yourself to learn about new research in the field of Education… this session is for you.

Literacy is the foundation for learning and should be taught as skills for problem solving, communication, and knowledge building. As the research shows from Lucas Education Research, when literacy is embedded into project based learning, students begin to perform better in literacy and science!

Last Thursday, Friedrich Faulhammer, the Rector of Universität für Weiterbildung Krems (the University for Continuing Education Krems) and our guest, made multiple valuable points about continuing education. I will share a few below, but, please, listen to the conversation: after all, if everything goes well, in some more or less distant future, there should be many more universities that spread their focus way beyond students of 'traditional' age and experience.
Key takeaways:
1. Universities should not have strategies, but rather strategic frameworks. Why? Because people with advanced expertise work there and they a) could take a university in unexpected directors if given room to manoeuvre; b) would be limited by narrow boundaries. I would say that 1) in a dire situation, a university needs a clear and exact strategy, which can be relaxed during the times of growth and expansion; 2) the more advanced and devoted the talent, the fewer regulations should be needed, as a rule.
2. The University for Continuing Education Krems both focus on continuing education (like many an agile start-up out there, outsourcing faculty and ideas) AND is a bona fide research university. Why? Because "We stand for the high quality of content", in the words of rector Faulhammer. Research, discovery guide (and guard) relevance indeed.
3. The university contributes significantly to the European University for Academic Continuing Education (EU.ACE), an alliance of higher education institutions which advances innovative tailored lifelong learning paths. This helps to further develop the system and, I would argue, is noble and necessary: on the one hand, more competitors will arise, but, on the other hand, there is not much choice. Academic continuing education offering should keep expanding.
The next webinar is on the 24th of October, and we shall explore Forward College. See you there!

From 2022-2024 CAEL worked with four postsecondary institutions in Texas on improving outcomes for adult and Latino adult learners. Now, the findings from our independent evaluator Ithaka S+R are out!
Spoiler alert: all institutions made significant progress in their areas of focus, and many overall lessons emerged that can be applied to any institution interested in pursuing similar goals, including:
📊 Use data to build a business case for developing an intentional strategy for targeting and supporting adult learners
👩🎓 Adult learners themselves are valuable partners in identifying strategies for improvement
📣 Focus on building broad awareness of these programs among staff, faculty, and students
