Following last week's announcement that our new Chief Scientific & Innovation Officer Louise Jopling will be leading, on behalf of the Campus, oversight of the fellowship programme of the collaboration between multiple Cambridge partners and the Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA), we thought now might be an opportune time to revisit what this involves. A large team from across the Cambridge life sciences, technology and business worlds have come together as Activation Partners in ARIA’s Scalable Neural Interfaces opportunity space, which aims to super charge progress on a new generation of neuro-technologies designed to treat conditions such as depression, dementia, chronic pain, epilepsy and injuries to the nervous system. It consists of two programmes over the three-year collaboration period to fast-track radical new technologies to revolutionise brain health: 🌟 A fellowship programme which will see innovators from across the UK supported to translate their exciting ideas. Blue Sky Fellows will receive funding to rapidly test their idea in Cambridge, along with mentorship from our best medical, scientific and business experts. While those who have proof of concept validation for their neuro-technology and need support to turn it into a business can apply to be an Activator Fellow and offered training in entrepreneurial skills. We will be sharing details of how to apply for the first tranche of Fellows in the coming weeks. 🌟 The ecosystem programme will create a vibrant, UK-wide neurotechnology community where leaders from business, science, engineering, academia and the NHS can meet, spark ideas and form collaborations. On #CleanAirDay read how researchers at University of Bath found that the introduction of low and ultra-low emission zones significantly reduced levels of key pollutants. Eleanora Fichera and Habtamu Ali Beshir used various sources of data to determine the causal impact of LEZ/ULEZ on air quality, physical health, and well-being. They compared areas where the policies were introduced to similar areas without these policies, before and after the implementation of LEZ/ULEZ. Communities benefited from improvements to their physical health and well-being, and a reduction of hospitalisations for respiratory problems. Now the team are finalising their work using hospital records and examining the detailed impact on maternal and child outcomes. This is a key part of our work to collect evidence on the impact of urban environment on health. #nationalcleanairday #LEZ #research Read the policy briefing

At this week's Institute for Government Conference, UCL speakers including Professor Naomi Fulop from UCL Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care, addressed the pressing challenges faced by Britain’s core public services—from criminal justice to the NHS.  “We are at a key moment for the NHS and social care as the Government develops its ten-year plan, and simultaneously, urgent repairs are needed to address the concerns of both citizens and staff,” said Professor Fulop, who emphasised the importance of collaboration in health reform. 🎉Congratulations to MSc Global Health Policy alumna, Constance Viehbeck, for publishing a commentary in The Lancet based on her MSc dissertation. 📚 Constance's research explores whether women experience more adverse drug reactions (ADRs) from medications approved through expedited pathways, focusing on the case of dronedarone. 🔍 The results showed that women were underrepresented in the #ClinicalTrials and more likely to suffer from preventable and fatal ADRs after the drug’s approval. ❗ This critical issue is compounded by the significant lack of data in this area. With expedited programmes making up over half of new drug approvals, Constance asks: are these approval processes disproportionately affecting certain subpopulations? 💡 The work highlights major challenges in healthcare policy—addressing crucial questions about #HealthEquity and #MedicineSafety. Our heartiest congratulations to Professor Dennis Wang and Dr Varsha Gupta from A*STAR Institute for Human Development and Potential (A*STAR IHDP) on being awarded the UK Research and Innovation Cross-Council Grant for their project 'Longitudinal machine learning of molecular and phenotypic trajectories of pulmonary hypertension'! ✨ Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) is a complex disease that is associated with a range of diseases and causes, such as molecular, lifestyle and environment, that can change over time and leads to poor prognosis. The project aims to use machine learning and longitudinal molecular data to predict the progression of PH. By combining clinical, molecular, and time- series data, the team will develop robust models to forecast future symptoms and molecular changes in patients. This interdisciplinary approach, integrating medicine, biology, epidemiology, and engineering, has the potential to improve diagnostics, identify new biomarkers, and enable more cost-effective and personalised treatments for PH and other complex diseases. Associate Professor Natalia Ares has been awarded a £100,000 Philip Leverhulme Prize for her work on experimental quantum physics. Philip Leverhulme Prizes recognise the achievement of outstanding research scholars whose future career is exceptionally promising, and whose work has made original and significant contributions to knowledge as well as shown sustained international impact. The focus of Associate Professor Ares’ research is quantum technologies, in particular controlling nanoscale circuits to unlock their potential for new technological applications and uncover fundamental physical phenomena. Specifically, her group works with semiconductor quantum devices. Their work explores thermodynamics at the nanoscale level and develops machine learning based-approaches for the control and characterization of quantum circuits. Ultimately, this will inform the construction of quantum machines such as nanoscale engines and novel computing architectures. https://lnkd.in/erJHD_zk

“Opportunities for practical science are particularly important for less engaged students but only 26% of GCSE students are doing hands-on practical work at least fortnightly, down from 44% in 2016, and interest in science has declined - this is perhaps unsurprising given how much we know students like practical work.” Alarming new report by EngineeringUK; clearly not enough has been done in the past decade to overcome these barriers! And it begs this question how are we going to compete economically on the world stage with these worrying trends?
